China Box Office: ‘Volunteers 2’ Dominates Holiday Weekend as Annual Total Reaches $5 Billion

Beijing, China – The Chinese box office roared back to life over the Labor Day holiday weekend, driven by the success of the historical epic “Volunteers 2.” The sequel to the 2021 hit, which tells the story of the Chinese People’s Volunteers during the Korean War, dominated the weekend, earning an estimated $130 million. This strong performance pushed the film to a cumulative total of $230 million in just five days, solidifying its position as a box office powerhouse.

The success of “Volunteers 2” contributed to a record-breaking weekend for Chinese cinemas. The total box office for the four-day holiday period reached an impressive $260 million, a significant increase compared to the previous year. This strong performance also pushed the annual box office total to a remarkable $5 billion, marking a significant milestone for the Chinese film industry.

While “Volunteers 2” reigned supreme, other releases also enjoyed success. The animated film “The Little Mermaid,” a Chinese adaptation of the classic Disney fairytale, garnered significant attention and performed well. Meanwhile, the Hollywood blockbuster “Fast X” continued its run with steady box office returns.

These positive developments suggest a strong rebound for the Chinese film industry after a challenging period marked by pandemic-related disruptions. The success of “Volunteers 2” and other releases underscores the growing appetite for diverse and high-quality content, pointing towards a bright future for Chinese cinema.
