Word games, from Scrabble to Boggle, require a strong vocabulary. But not just any vocabulary – you need words that are common, versatile, and lend themselves well to forming new words. This “common English lexicon” is your secret weapon for dominating word games.

Here are some key categories to focus on:

High-Scoring Letters:

S: A versatile letter often found in common words like “since,” “sense,” and “says.”

C: Great for extending words, especially with the common “SC” combination found in words like “score,” “scale,” and “scar.”

T: A solid choice for forming plurals and a frequent starter for words like “time,” “take,” and “tree.”

Short, Common Words:

A, I, O, U, Y: These vowels are crucial for building words.

BE, GO, IN, ON, TO: These common prefixes and suffixes are essential for extending words.

THE, AND, BUT, FOR: These conjunctions are useful for connecting words and creating longer phrases.

High-Value Letter Combinations:

QU: A high-value combination often found in words like “queen,” “quick,” and “quiet.”

J, K, X, Z: These letters are rare but valuable, especially when they form words like “jazz,” “kite,” “axe,” and “zoo.”

CH, SH, TH: These digraphs are common and can be used in a variety of words like “chair,” “ship,” and “think.”

Beyond the Basics:

Plurals:  Knowing common plurals like “cats,” “dogs,” and “books” can help you score points and extend words.

Past Tense Verbs: Words like “played,” “walked,” and “jumped” can be easily formed and are frequently used in game play.

Adjectives: Words like “big,” “small,” “happy,” and “sad” add variety and points to your word combinations.

Remember, building your vocabulary for word games takes time and practice. Start with these common words, expand your knowledge, and soon you’ll be a word game champion.
