How to Put a Turbo in a Car

Introduction:

Installing a turbocharger in your car can significantly increase its horsepower and change your driving experience entirely. In this article, we will guide you through the process of putting a turbo in a car. Although professional installation is recommended, this guide will provide you with the basic understanding and steps required to install a turbocharger in your car.

Key Components of a Turbo System:

1. Turbocharger: The turbocharger is the main component that helps increase engine power by forcing more air into the combustion chamber.

2. Intercooler: This component cools down the compressed air from the turbocharger before it enters the engine.

3. Blow-off valve (BOV): The BOV releases excess pressure when the throttle is closed, preventing compressor surge.

4. Exhaust manifold: This part channels exhaust gases from the engine to power the turbocharger turbine.

5. Wastegate: The wastegate controls and limits boost pressure by diverting excess exhaust gases away from the turbocharger.

Steps for Installing a Turbo in Your Car:

1. Assess your vehicle:

Before you proceed with installing a turbo, make sure your vehicle’s engine can handle the extra power generated by it. Verify if there’s enough space under your hood to accommodate all necessary components.

2. Choose a suitable turbo kit:

Based on your vehicle and engine specifics, select an appropriate turbo kit that provides all needed components and meets quality standards.

3. Remove or relocate components obstructing installation:

Make space in your engine bay for the new setup by removing or relocating any obstructing components (e.g., air filter, battery, etc.).

4. Install the exhaust manifold:

Remove your car’s existing exhaust manifold and replace it with the one provided in your turbo kit.

5. Mount the turbocharger:

Attach the turbocharger to the newly installed exhaust manifold using proper gasket seals and fasteners.

6. Connect the oil lines:

Your turbocharger will need oil for lubrication and cooling. Connect the appropriate oil feed lines from your engine to the turbocharger.

7. Install the intercooler:

Position the intercooler in a location with sufficient airflow and mount it securely. Attach piping from the turbocharger compressor outlet to the intercooler’s inlet, and similarly, connect piping from the intercooler’s outlet to your engine’s intake manifold.

8. Install the blow-off valve:

Locate an appropriate spot between the intercooler and your throttle body to install the BOV in your charge pipe.

9. Set up the wastegate:

Attach the wastegate to your exhaust manifold or turbo housing depending on its type (internal or external). Connect any necessary vacuum lines that regulate its function.

10. Modify fuel system:

To accommodate higher horsepower, you may need to upgrade fuel injectors and install a high-flow fuel pump.

11. Refit any removed components:

Once all turbo components are installed, refit any previously removed parts (e.g., air filter, battery).

12. Tune your engine:

You must ensure that air/fuel mixture, ignition timing, and boost pressure are properly adjusted to avoid damaging your engine. A professional tune is highly recommended.

Conclusion:

Turbocharging your car can do wonders for its performance, but proper installation is crucial. While this guide offers essential steps to install a typical turbo system, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of consulting a professional mechanic or having an experienced technician handle this process for you to ensure a safe, reliable outcome.
