3 Ways to Measure Speed

Introduction:

Speed – it’s a term we often hear in our daily lives, be it related to transportation, sports, or even internet connectivity. But have you ever thought about how speed is measured? With various methods and technologies available today, we’ll dive into three different ways to measure speed and how they work. So, buckle up as we explore the fascinating world of measuring speed!

1.Radar Guns

One of the most popular and commonly used tools for measuring speed is the radar gun. Originally developed for policing traffic and monitoring the speed of sports like baseball, basketball, and tennis, radar guns have proven to be very accurate in capturing the speed of moving objects.

A radar gun works by emitting a radio frequency wave towards the moving object and then measuring the time it takes for the signal to bounce back. The change in frequency caused by the Doppler effect helps determine the object’s speed. The advantage of using a radar gun is that it’s portable and can be used remotely.

2.LIDAR Technology

LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology is another method utilized for measuring speed, particularly in traffic enforcement. Using laser beams instead of radio waves, LIDAR devices send short pulses of light towards a moving object. By calculating the time taken for the light pulses to bounce back and reach the device, the distance traveled by the light can be determined. This information is then used to calculate the object’s speed.

LIDAR technology offers higher accuracy than traditional radar guns because lasers have a more focused beam, allowing it to pinpoint specific objects better. It’s also less susceptible to interference from other electronic devices or atmospheric conditions.

3.GPS Tracking

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is not only useful for navigation but also for measuring speed accurately over long distances. GPS calculates your speed by measuring your position at specific time intervals and then determining the distance traveled during that time.

Most modern smartphones, vehicles, and fitness devices now come equipped with GPS technology, enabling users to track their speed in real-time. One benefit of using GPS tracking is that it can measure speed precisely even when traveling at very low speeds or in densely-populated areas where radar guns and LIDAR devices may struggle to find a clear line of sight.

Conclusion:

Measuring speed has never been easier thanks to technological advancements like radar guns, LIDAR, and GPS tracking. Each method offers various advantages and limitations, so the best approach will depend on the specific use case and conditions. Whatever your need may be, any one of these three techniques provides a reliable way to measure speed – helping make our roads safer, improve the accuracy of sports data, and even enhancing our understanding of the world around us.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
