3 Simple Ways to Get to Fire Island

Introduction:

Fire Island, a beautiful barrier island located off the southern coast of Long Island, New York, is a popular summer destination that offers pristine beaches, lush parks, and numerous recreational activities. With its serene atmosphere and car-free ambiance, Fire Island is an ideal getaway for those looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here are three simple ways to get to Fire Island.

1. Take the Ferry:

One of the most popular and convenient methods to reach Fire Island is by taking a ferry. Several ferry companies provide regular services from various points on Long Island to different communities on Fire Island. Some of the major ferry operators include:

– Sayville Ferry Service: Providing transportation to some of Fire Island’s most beloved communities such as Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines, Sailors Haven and Water Island.

– Patchogue Ferries: Offering service from Patchogue to Davis Park and Watch Hill.

– Bay Shore Ferries: Connecting Bay Shore with popular destinations like Kismet, Saltaire, Ocean Beach, and Fair Harbor.

Each ferry trip lasts for approximately 30 minutes to one hour and usually runs on a tight schedule throughout the day during peak seasons. Make sure you check their timetables in advance and arrive early since tickets can only be purchased at the dock.

2. Take a Water Taxi:

If you’re staying in one of the island’s smaller communities or want a more flexible option for your journey between towns, consider using a water taxi. Water taxis are small boats that operate within the Great South Bay and are authorized to transport passengers between different points on Fire Island.

The two main water taxi companies serving Fire Island are Fire Island Water Taxi and South Bay Water Taxi Services. These taxis generally run from early morning until late evening and can be booked by phone or through their respective websites.

3. Cross the Robert Moses Causeway:

If you’re up for a little adventure and exercise, consider crossing the Robert Moses Causeway to access Fire Island. The causeway is located on the western side of the island and connects to Robert Moses State Park. Here, you can park your car at the Field 5 parking lot and walk or bike along the path that leads directly into Fire Island’s wilderness.

It’s important to note that this option is feasible only if you’re visiting the more remote sections of Fire Island. The island’s main communities and beach towns remain car-free.

Conclusion:

Whichever option you choose, getting to Fire Island couldn’t be easier! Whether you prefer a leisurely ferry ride, a quick water taxi hop, or a hike across the beautiful barrier island, make sure to plan accordingly and enjoy all that this New York treasure has to offer.
