Arizona is a state rich with history and culture, evident in its well-preserved downtown districts. These historic downtowns are not just monuments to the past but living centers of community, art, dining, and entertainment. Here’s a look at the ten best historic downtowns in Arizona that offer a captivating blend of the old and new.

1.Prescott’s Whiskey Row

Known for its Wild West ambiance, Whiskey Row in Prescott is lined with saloons, boutiques, and galleries. Once frequented by iconic figures like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, it now hosts live music and various events within its historic buildings.

2.Tombstone’s Allen Street

Tombstone’s legendary past as a frontier silver mining boomtown lives on in Allen Street. Stroll along the wooden boardwalks beside historic saloons, and don’t miss the famous O.K. Corral where the Earp brothers fought the Clanton gang.

3.Flagstaff’s Historic Downtown

With its blend of Native American and Old West heritage, Flagstaff’s downtown is known for its historic Route 66 landmarks. Vibrant with local shops, restaurants, and the Historic Weatherford Hotel, it’s a hub of Northern Arizona culture.

4.Bisbee’s Brewery Gulch

Once home to one of the wealthiest mining districts in the world, Brewery Gulch echoes with history through its restored Victorian architecture and hosts a colorful arts scene.

5.Jerome’s Main Street

Perched on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley, Jerome’s Main Street is filled with art galleries, coffee houses, and boutiques set in buildings once inhabited by miners during the town’s copper mining days.

6.Yuma’s Main Street

In a city that once held the infamous Yuma Territorial Prison, Yuma’s revitalized Main Street boasts historic sites alongside trendy eateries and shops creating a unique juxtaposition between yesterday and today.

7.Globe’s Broad Street

Rich in mining history, Broad Street in Globe offers antique stores housed in historic buildings where adventurers can find keepsakes from Arizona’s mining heyday.

8.Scottsdale’s Old Town

Old Town Scottsdale showcases its Western heritage alongside contemporary arts and dining. Visitors can explore Native American crafts or enjoy modern amenities within this versatile district.

9.Tucson’s El Presidio Historic District

El Presidio serves as Tucson’s founding neighborhood where Spanish colonial influences fuse with modern craft markets and festivals celebrating Tucson’s multicultural legacy.

10.Phoenix’s Heritage Square

The only remaining group of residential structures from the original townsite of Phoenix, Heritage Square includes beautifully preserved Victorian-era homes turned into museums showcasing Phoenix’s early days.

These ten historic downtowns are not just essential parts of Arizona’s cultural tapestry—they are also vibrant communities where history is still very much alive. Each district offers an opportunity to step back into another era while enjoying the comforts and excitement of present-day Arizona
