5 Best Day Trips From Paris

Paris is not only a destination in itself but also a perfect base to explore the diverse countryside and historic sites of France. A short train ride or drive can lead you to picturesque landscapes, breathtaking chateaux, enchanting towns, and areas of remarkable beauty. Here are five of the best day trips from Paris that promise a memorable escape from the bustle of the city:

1. Versailles: The Royal Chateaux and Gardens

A trip to the Palace of Versailles is like stepping into the pages of a history book. Located just 20 kilometers southwest of Paris, Versailles is renowned for its opulent château—the former residence of kings such as Louis XIV—and the magnificent gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. Visitors can explore the grandiose Hall of Mirrors, King’s Grand Apartments, and Queen’s Hamlet, or stroll through the immaculate gardens with their fountains and sculptures.

2. Giverny: Monet’s Haven

The small village of Giverny is synonymous with Claude Monet, who lived and painted here for 43 years. Art lovers are drawn to his house and lush gardens where they can see the water lilies and Japanese bridge that inspired many of his masterpieces. Spring and summer are particularly rewarding times to visit when the flowers are in full bloom.

3. Château de Chantilly

Chantilly, about 50 kilometers north of Paris, hosts an impressive complex that includes the Château de Chantilly set within extensive grounds housing one of France’s finest art galleries – Musée Condé, second only to the Louvre in its collection of antique paintings. While there, don’t forget to taste the famous Crème Chantilly – a sweet delight supposedly originated here.

4. Fontainebleau: A Forest and its Palace

Fontainebleau offers a great mix of nature and history. The Château de Fontainebleau is surrounded by an expansive forest where French kings once hunted. The palace itself showcases diverse architectural styles and houses exquisite furniture collections. Travellers can indulge in outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing or simply picnicking amongst ancient oak trees in the forest.

5. Reims: The Champagne Capital

No visit to France is complete without sipping some champagne, and Reims is just 45 minutes by train from Paris. This city in the heart of champagne country boasts several prestigious champagne houses available for tours and tastings. In addition to bubbly experiences, visitors can marvel at Reims’ grand Gothic cathedral where French kings were once crowned.

Each destination provides a unique experience highlighting French culture, history, art, or natural beauty – warranting at least one day for exploration and enjoyment!
