How to Use Neopronouns: 6 Steps

Using neopronouns is an important way to respect and validate the gender identity of those who don’t identify with traditional pronouns. Neopronouns are a set of third-person pronouns that are not gendered, allowing people to express their identity more accurately. Here’s how you can start using neopronouns in six simple steps:

1. Learn about different neopronouns: Before you can use neopronouns confidently, learn about the various options available. Some common examples include “ze/hir,” “xe/xem,” and “ey/em.” Take the time to research and understand these pronouns, their meanings, and the identities they represent.

2. Ask for someone’s pronouns: When you meet someone new or are uncertain about which pronouns they use, politely ask for their preferred pronouns. This shows that you respect their identity and want to address them correctly.

3. Practice using neopronouns: Just like learning a new language, practice is key when it comes to using neopronouns effortlessly. Start by using them in your daily conversations or writing to become more comfortable with incorporating them into your lexicon.

4. Correct yourself if needed: If you accidentally use the wrong pronoun, quickly apologize and correct yourself. Acknowledge the mistake without making a big deal out of it and move on with the conversation.

5. Gently correct others: If you hear someone else misgendering a person who uses neopronouns, kindly interject and offer the correct pronoun if it feels appropriate to do so. Be sensitive to the situation and ensure it’s done respectfully.

6. Advocate for inclusivity: Encourage workplaces, schools, and social circles to adopt inclusive language policies that respect everyone’s gender identity by using preferred names and pronouns. Share your knowledge with others who may be unfamiliar with neopronouns.

By following these six steps and incorporating neopronouns into your everyday interactions, you’ll be promoting a more inclusive and respectful environment for all. Remember, language is an evolving tool for communication, and using neopronouns is just one way we can adapt to better honor the diverse identities of those around us.
