How to Do Your Laundry in a Dorm

Laundry is one of those inevitable aspects of life, and when you’re living in a dorm, it may seem like a daunting task. Don’t worry! In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of doing your laundry in a dorm setting.
1. Gather Your Supplies
Before getting started, collect everything you’ll need to wash and dry your clothes. This includes laundry detergent, fabric softener (if desired), a laundry bag or hamper for transporting dirty clothes, and some quarters or credit for the washing machines.
2. Sort Your Laundry
Separate your clothes into different piles – one for whites, one for darks and colors, and another for delicate items that require special care. This will help keep your whites bright and prevent color bleeding onto lighter garments.
3. Choose the Right Detergent
Select a detergent that is safe for high efficiency (HE) washing machines since most dorms use energy-saving machines. It’s essential to follow the recommended amount of detergent, as using too much can damage your clothes or leave residue buildup in the washer.
4. Load the Washing Machine
Take your separated laundry and load it into an empty washing machine. It’s crucial not to overstuff the machine so that your clothes can be thoroughly cleaned. Add your chosen detergent according to the directions on the packaging.
5. Select the Appropriate Settings
Choose the right settings on the washing machine according to your laundry needs:
– For whites: Use hot water and select a regular cycle.
– For darks and colors: Use cold water with a gentle cycle.
– For delicate items: Select an even gentler cycle with cold water.
Start the washing machine once you’ve configured these settings.
6. Wait for Your Laundry
Set a timer so you know when your laundry will be done. While waiting, get some studying done or catch up with friends! Just make sure not to leave your laundry unattended for too long, as other students may need to use the machines.
7. Unload and Load the Dryer
Once the washing cycle is complete, swiftly transfer your wet garments to the dryer. Don’t forget to clean out the lint trap before starting your drying cycle. Set the dryer to the appropriate heat level – high for towels and sheets, medium for regular clothes, and low for delicate or synthetic materials – and start the drying process.
8. Fold or Hang Your Clothes
After your clothes are dry, promptly fold or hang them up to avoid wrinkles. If clothes are left sitting for too long in a pile, they can become musty or creased.
9. Put Everything Away
Place your folded clothes back into your wardrobe and return empty laundry bags or hampers to their designated spots.
Now that you know how to do your laundry in a dorm, it should feel like a less tedious chore. Establishing a regular laundry schedule will make adapting to dorm life even smoother!
