3 Ways to Cook Jalapenos

Jalapenos are a versatile and delicious ingredient that can add a spicy kick to various dishes. These small, green chili peppers are packed with flavor and varying levels of heat, depending on their ripeness. Cooking jalapenos not only enhances their taste but also can help to tame some of the pepper’s spiciness. In this article, we will explore three different methods for cooking jalapenos: grilling, stuffing, and pickling.

1. Grilling

Grilling is a fantastic way to cook jalapenos, as it brings out their natural smoky flavor while slightly toning down their spiciness. Here’s a simple method for grilling jalapenos:

– Preheat your grill to medium heat.

– Wash the jalapenos and dry them thoroughly.

– Toss the whole jalapenos in a bowl with a small amount of olive oil, salt, and pepper.

– Place the jalapenos on the grill, close the lid, and cook for approximately 3-5 minutes on each side until softened and slightly charred.

– Remove from the grill and let them cool before slicing or dicing for your favorite recipes.

2. Stuffing

Stuffed jalapenos are an excellent appetizer or snack that can be customized with various fillings. Follow these steps for perfectly stuffed jalapenos:

– Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

– Halve the jalapenos lengthwise, removing seeds and membranes for less heat.

– In a bowl, combine your choice of filling ingredients such as cream cheese, shredded cheese, crumbled bacon, or spices.

– Stuff each jalapeno half with the filling mixture.

– Place stuffed jalapenos on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil.

– Bake for 15-20 minutes until the jalapeno halves are tender and filling is bubbly and golden.

3. Pickling

Pickled jalapenos can be a delicious addition to salads, sandwiches, or tacos. Pickling mellows the heat of jalapenos while preserving their flavor. Here’s how to pickle jalapenos:

– Wash and slice the jalapenos into rounds or strips.

– In a saucepan, combine equal parts water and white vinegar, along with sugar, salt, and any additional spices you may like (such as garlic, onion, or black peppercorns), and bring to a boil.

– Pack the sliced jalapenos in a clean mason jar, leaving half an inch of space from the top.

– Pour the boiling pickling liquid over the jalapenos until they are fully submerged.

– Place a lid on the jar and allow it to cool to room temperature before storing in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours to let flavors develop.

These three cooking methods offer unique ways to enjoy jalapenos, making them an excellent ingredient for both novice cooks and culinary experts alike. Now that you know how to cook jalapenos using grilling, stuffing, and pickling techniques, go ahead and spice up your favorite dishes with this versatile chili pepper!
