Measuring your dog’s height is important for various reasons such as selecting the right size crate, choosing dog agility equipment, or finding the best-fitting harness. Keeping track of your dog’s height can also be helpful to monitor their growth and overall health. Below are seven steps to help you measure your dog’s height accurately.

1. Gather the necessary tools: To measure the height of your dog, you will need a measuring tape (preferably a flexible one), a level surface like a wall or door frame, and a straightedge, such as a ruler or a book.

2. Find a level surface: Choose a level and sturdy surface for your dog to stand on during measurements; this can be indoors or outdoors, as long as it provides ample space for your dog to move around.

3. Position your dog: Ask your dog to stand straight with their head up and looking forward. Ensure all four paws are flat on the ground and that their legs are not bent or stretched out. It may help to have someone assist you in holding your dog still while measuring.

4. Locate the highest point of shoulders: The correct point to measure a dog’s height is from the ground to their withers (the highest point of the shoulder blades). Gently run your hand along their back until you feel the highest point, which is where the shoulder blades meet.

5. Align the straightedge: Hold the ruler or book horizontally against your dog’s withers so that it touches the wall or door frame, forming a right angle. This will give you an accurate reference point to measure from.

6. Measure from ground to reference point: Use the flexible measuring tape to measure from the floor directly below the reference point on the wall or doorframe up to that point. Record this measurement as your dog’s height.

7. Double-check and record measurements: Repeating the process will help you ensure accurate measurements. Compare the two numbers, and if they are similar, take an average of the two as your dog’s final height.

Knowing your dog’s height is important in understanding their overall health and ensuring that they have appropriately sized equipment. By following these seven steps, you can accurately measure your dog’s height and keep track of their growth.
