4 Ways to Remove Drawers

If you’ve ever needed to move a piece of furniture or reorganize your storage, you’ve likely faced the task of removing drawers from dressers, cabinets, or desks. While the process might seem intimidating at first, there are several methods for safely and efficiently removing drawers. In this article, we will explore four different ways to do so.
1. Standard Slide-Out Method
Most drawers are designed with simple slide-out mechanisms that allow for easy removal. To use this method:
a. Open the drawer as far as it will go.
b. Place one hand on either side of the drawer to keep it stable.
c. Gently pull the drawer towards you while lifting slightly upward.
d. Continue pulling until the drawer comes free from its tracks.
If your drawer does not slide out easily, it may have safety stops that prevent accidental removal. Inspect the underside of the drawer for a small lever or button and press it to release these stops.
2. Unscrewing Rail Mechanism
Some drawers utilize metal rails and screws to hold them in place. If this is the case for your furniture:
a. Open the drawer and locate the screws on each side rail.
b. Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the screws attaching the rails to the drawer.
c. Once all of the screws have been removed, lift the drawer out of its position.
Be sure to store screws in a secure location, such as a labeled plastic baggie or small container, to avoid losing them.
3. Tilting Release Technique
In certain cases, furniture manufacturers install drawers with tilting release mechanisms to facilitate easy removal. To attempt this method:
a. Open the drawer about halfway.
b. Firmly grasp each side of the front of the drawer.
c. Gently lift and tilt one side upward while pressing down on the opposite side.
d. Carefully pull the drawer out, repeating the tilting motion if needed.
If the drawer still does not budge, there may be additional safety latches that need to be released.
4. Lever or Clip Systems
Some modern drawers incorporate lever or clip systems to secure them in place. Try this approach if you come across such a design:
a. Pull the drawer open as far as possible.
b. Inspect both sides of the drawer’s railings for a small lever or clip.
c. Push down or pull up on these levers or clips to release the drawer from its tracks.
d. Carefully slide the drawer out while keeping it level.
Remember to ensure that you are working carefully and not applying excessive force when removing drawers using these methods.
In conclusion, knowing how to properly remove drawers can simplify furniture maintenance, storage reorganization, and moving procedures. It is important to identify the specific mechanism used in your drawers and apply the appropriate technique for a smooth and stress-free experience.
