Ways to Remove a Broken Contact Lens

Introduction:

A broken contact lens can be a real annoyance and may even put your eye at risk of injury. If your contact lens has broken, it’s essential to remain calm and take the necessary steps to safely remove the lens from your eye. In this article, we will discuss three different ways to remove a broken contact lens effectively.

1. Saline Solution:

The first method to try when removing a broken contact lens is using a saline solution. The saline solution can help lubricate the eye and make it easier for you to remove the broken lens.

– Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

– Prepare a clean towel or tissue on which you can place the removed lens pieces.

– Gently tilt your head back and apply a few drops of saline solution into your affected eye.

– Wait for a few seconds, then try to locate the broken lens piece by looking in a mirror.

– If you can see the piece, use your index finger and thumb to gently pinch it out of your eye.

– Place the removed piece on the prepared towel or tissue.

2. Blinking Technique:

Another technique that might help you remove a broken contact lens is blinking. By blinking rapidly, you might be able to create enough natural tears in your eye to help dislodge and remove the broken lens.

– Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

– Tilt your head back slightly and look upward.

– Blink rapidly several times, trying not to squeeze your eyelids too tightly.

– Once you feel that the broken piece has moved, you may try gently pinching it out with your fingers as described in method one or using a soft cotton swab.

– Place the removed piece on a clean towel or tissue.

3. Eye Massage:

If neither of the above methods works, you can attempt an eye massage technique. This should only be done if you cannot see the broken lens piece and are unable to remove it using the previous methods.

– Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

– Close your eye and gently massage the outer corner of your eyelid, moving in a circular motion.

– Be gentle, as excessive pressure can cause injury.

– As you massage, the fluid around your eye should help to dislodge the broken lens piece.

– Once you think that the broken lens piece has dislodged, try removing it as described in method one or using a soft cotton swab.

Conclusion:

Removing a broken contact lens can be frustrating and uncomfortable. If you’re having difficulty or experiencing severe pain during the removal process, it’s best to consult an eye care professional immediately to avoid any further damage. Remember, never use sharp objects or excessive force when attempting to remove a broken contact lens. Always prioritize your eye health and safety.
