3 Easy Ways to Thicken BBQ Sauce

Introduction:

BBQ sauce is an essential element of outdoor gatherings and cookouts, adding rich flavor to an assortment of grilled dishes. Sometimes, however, the sauce might be too thin for your desired consistency. To help you achieve the perfect thickness for your BBQ sauce, we have compiled a list of three easy methods to consider.

1. Reduction:

One of the simplest ways to thicken your BBQ sauce is through the process of reduction. Here’s how to do it:

– Pour the BBQ sauce into a saucepan.

– Place the saucepan on low heat to prevent burning.

– Let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes or until it reaches your desired thickness. Be sure to stir it occasionally to avoid any sticking.

– Remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool before applying it to your dish.

During this process, excess water in the BBQ sauce evaporates, allowing other ingredients to become more concentrated and provide a thicker texture.

2. Cornstarch:

Using cornstarch as a thickening agent is another popular method. This technique works best if you’re in a hurry or looking for a gluten-free option. To use cornstarch:

– Mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water until it forms a smooth slurry.

– Slowly pour this mixture into your BBQ sauce while stirring continuously.

– Allow the combined mixtures to simmer for several minutes as it thickens.

– Remember that cornstarch may alter the flavor profile slightly, so taste your BBQ sauce and adjust seasonings accordingly.

3. Mashed Potatoes:

For those seeking a slightly unconventional yet still effective thickening method, try using instant mashed potatoes. This option won’t greatly impact the taste or color of your BBQ sauce. Here’s how you do it:

– Prepare ¼ cup of instant mashed potatoes according to their package directions.

– Gradually add the mashed potatoes to your BBQ sauce, stirring constantly to maintain a smooth texture.

– Continue adding small amounts until reaching the desired thickness.

– Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings, if necessary.

Conclusion:

Thickening BBQ sauce may seem daunting, but with these three easy techniques, you’ll be well-equipped to achieve your desired consistency. Whether you opt for reduction, cornstarch, or mashed potatoes, you’re now prepared to masterfully elevate the flavor of your next cookout.
