3 Ways to Treat Hand Eczema

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that can cause dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. Hand eczema is a type of eczema that affects the hands, making them prone to itching, redness, and cracking. It can be both painful and inconvenient, especially when it comes to performing daily tasks. If you’re struggling with hand eczema, don’t worry – there are several ways to treat and manage this condition. In this article, we’ll explore three effective ways to treat hand eczema.

1. Topical Treatments

One of the most common ways to treat hand eczema is through the use of topical treatments – creams and ointments applied directly to the affected area. There are multiple options available depending on the severity of your symptoms:

a) Over-the-counter (OTC) creams: For mild cases of hand eczema, over-the-counter creams containing hydrocortisone can help reduce inflammation and itching. These creams are readily available at most pharmacies and can be applied as often as directed by the label or your doctor.

b) Prescription creams: If OTC treatments aren’t providing enough relief, your doctor may prescribe a stronger topical steroid cream to reduce inflammation more effectively. These creams should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional and typically should not be used for extended periods.

c) Calcineurin inhibitors: These are non-steroidal creams prescribed by doctors for those who cannot tolerate or do not respond well to steroid creams. Calcineurin inhibitors help control inflammation without the side effects associated with long-term use of corticosteroids.

2. Moisturizing and Soothing Skincare

Establishing a proper skincare routine is crucial in managing hand eczema symptoms. This involves regular moisturizing with products specifically designed for sensitive, eczema-prone skin:

a) Hand creams and ointments: Use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic hand cream or ointment several times a day, especially after washing your hands. These products create a protective barrier to lock in moisture and prevent irritants from further aggravating your skin.

b) Gentle cleansers: Switch to mild, fragrance-free hand soaps and avoid using harsh chemicals or alcohol-based sanitizers that can exacerbate eczema.

c) Soaking and cool compresses: For relief from itching and inflammation, soak your hands in cool water for 10-15 minutes or apply a cold compress for 15-20 minutes. This can help calm irritated skin and reduce inflammation.

3. Lifestyle Changes

Various lifestyle changes can help manage hand eczema symptoms and promote the healing process:

a) Avoidance of triggers: Identify potential triggers for your hand eczema, such as harsh cleaning products, certain foods, or allergens like dust or pet dander. By avoiding these triggers, you can minimize flare-ups.

b) Wear gloves: When performing tasks that involve water, chemicals, or irritants, wear protective gloves made from materials like cotton or nitrile to shield your hands from damage.

c) Manage stress: Stress can exacerbate eczema symptoms. Participate in stress-relieving activities such as yoga, meditation, exercise, or hobbies that promote relaxation.

In summary, treating hand eczema involves a combination of topical treatments, proper skincare routines, and lifestyle modifications. It’s essential to work closely with a healthcare professional who can help you determine the best treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. With the right care and consistency, managing hand eczema is possible, and relief is just around the corner.
