3 Ways to Dry Chives

Chives are a versatile herb known for their subtle onion-like flavor, which makes them a popular addition to various dishes. To extend their shelf life, many people choose to dry chives and preserve their flavor for future use. In this article, we will explore three different methods to effectively dry chives: air drying, oven drying, and microwave drying. Let us dive into each of these methods and learn how to effectively preserve your chives.

1. Air Drying

Air drying is the most traditional method of preserving herbs and offers the advantage of retaining the maximum amount of flavor. To air dry chives:

– Wash the chives thoroughly under cold water and pat them dry with a clean towel.

– Gather small bundles of chives (around 10-15 stems) and secure them together with rubber bands or string.

– Hang the bundles upside down in a well-ventilated, dry, and dark place. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may cause discoloration and affect the flavor.

– Place a paper bag or cheesecloth around each bundle to protect them from dust while allowing air circulation.

– Let the bundles hang for 1-2 weeks. Check regularly for any signs of mold or decay.

– Once completely dry, gently crush the chives with your fingers and store them in an airtight container.

2. Oven Drying

Oven drying is faster than air drying but requires more attention to prevent any loss of flavor or nutrients. To oven dry chives:

– Preheat your oven to its lowest setting (usually between 100°F – 150°F).

– Wash and pat dry the chives as mentioned in the air-drying method.

– Spread out a single layer of chives on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

– Place the tray in the oven and ensure that the oven door remains slightly open to allow moisture to escape.

– Check on the chives every 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure even drying.

– After approximately 2-3 hours, the chives should be dry and crisp. Remove them from the oven and let them cool completely before storing.

3. Microwave Drying

Microwave drying is the fastest method of drying chives, but it requires close supervision to avoid overheating. To microwave dry chives:

– Clean and pat dry the chives as described in the previous methods.

– Arrange a single layer of chives on a microwave-safe plate lined with paper towels.

– Microwave the chives on low power for 30-second intervals, checking and rearranging them after each interval.

– After approximately 2-3 minutes, the chives should be completely dry. Allow them to cool outside the microwave before storing in an airtight container.

In conclusion, drying chives is an excellent way to preserve their flavor and enjoy their culinary benefits year-round. By utilizing one of these three methods – air drying, oven drying, or microwave drying – you can easily extend the shelf life of your homegrown or store-bought chives.
