4 Ways to Get Rid of Bad Breath from Onion or Garlic

Introduction

Onion and garlic are widely used ingredients in various dishes worldwide due to their rich flavor and potential health benefits. However, they often lead to bad breath, which can be challenging to eliminate. Luckily, several remedies can effectively neutralize onion or garlic breath. In this article, we will explore four methods to get rid of bad breath caused by these potent foods.

1. Chew on Fresh Parsley or Mint

Believe it or not, chewing on fresh parsley or mint leaves can significantly reduce bad breath caused by onion or garlic consumption. Both herbs contain chlorophyll, which is a natural deodorizer that neutralizes the odor-causing compounds found in these foods. Simply chew on a few sprigs of parsley or mint for a few minutes after eating to enjoy fresher breath.

2. Drink Lemon Water

Lemon is well-known for its refreshing qualities due to its high citric acid content. This acid helps combat the strong taste of onion and garlic while effectively neutralizing the associated odors. After eating a meal containing onions or garlic, mix a tablespoon of lemon juice into a glass of water and drink it slowly. Lemon water is not only an excellent remedy for bad breath but also a great tool for maintaining overall oral health.

3. Consume Green Tea

Green tea contains polyphenols, which help fight off the sulfur compounds produced by consuming onion and garlic. To benefit from green tea’s odor-fighting properties, simply sip on a cup after consuming onion- or garlic-rich dishes. If you’re not a fan of hot beverages, consider trying iced green tea as an alternative, ensuring it’s unsweetened to preserve its effectiveness.

4. Brush Your Teeth and Clean Your Tongue

Last but not least, maintaining impeccable oral hygiene can keep bad breath at bay when regularly consuming onions or garlic. Brush your teeth for at least two minutes at least twice a day to remove food particles that can lead to bad breath. Additionally, don’t forget to clean your tongue, as it’s also responsible for harboring odor-causing bacteria. Use a tongue scraper or gently brush your tongue with a toothbrush to prevent unwanted smells.

Conclusion

Although onions and garlic are notorious for causing bad breath, these four methods can help you enjoy their flavors without facing the unwanted consequences. Remember to chew on fresh parsley or mint, drink lemon water or green tea, and maintain proper oral hygiene to avoid enduring the embarrassment of onion- or garlic-induced bad breath.
