3 Simple Ways to Install Weather Stripping

As the seasons change, keeping your home comfortable and energy-efficient becomes a top priority. One essential step in achieving this goal is to ensure your doors and windows are properly sealed, preventing drafts and air leaks. Installing weather stripping is an effective and cost-efficient solution to ensure the cozy confines of your home remain intact. In this article, we will explore three simple methods for installing weather stripping.

1. Adhesive-backed Foam Tape

Adhesive-backed foam tape is an affordable and convenient option for sealing gaps around doors and windows. To install adhesive-backed foam tape, follow these steps:

a. Clean the surface: Before starting, make sure the area around the door or window is clean and dry, as dirt or moisture may compromise the adhesive’s effectiveness.

b. Measure and cut: Measure the length of the door or window frame where you’ll be applying the tape, then cut the foam tape to size.

c. Peel and stick: Peel off the backing from the adhesive side of the foam tape, and carefully press it onto the door or window frame along its entire length.

2. V-strip (Tension Seal)

V-strip, also known as tension seal or V-channel, is a durable plastic or metal strip that folds into a ‘V’ shape when compressed by closing a door or window. This creates a tight seal against drafts and air leaks. To install V-strip weather stripping:

a. Clean and measure: As with adhesive-backed foam tape, clean the installation area first, then measure the length needed for your door or window.

b. Cut to size: Using scissors or tin snips (for metal V-strips), cut the V-strip to match your measurements.

c. Attach: For self-adhesive V-strips, simply peel off the backing paper and press the strip firmly onto your door or window frame. For non-adhesive V-strips, a small number of nails or screws may be required to secure it in place.

3. Door sweeps and brush strips

Door sweeps and brush strips are designed to create a tight seal along the bottom of your door, preventing drafts from entering beneath the door. To install a door sweep or brush strip:

a. Measure and cut: Measure the width of the door’s bottom edge, then cut the door sweep or brush strip to size.

b. Position: Position the door sweep or brush strip so that it brushes against the threshold (floor) when the door is closed. For optimal results, aim for minimal friction between the sweep or brush strip and the threshold.

c. Attach: Screw or nail the door sweep or brush strip onto your door’s bottom edge.

In conclusion, weather stripping is an essential tool in helping maintain your home’s energy efficiency and comfort levels. By using adhesive-backed foam tape, V-strip, or door sweeps and brush strips, you can quickly and easily seal any gaps around your doors and windows. With these simple installation methods at hand, you’ll be well on your way to a cozier living space in no time.
