How to Freeze Parsnips: 10 Steps

Introduction:

Parsnips are a delicious and nutritious root vegetable that many people enjoy. As with many vegetables, parsnips are best when eaten fresh, but sometimes you may find yourself with an abundance of them. Freezing parsnips is a great way to preserve their flavor and texture for later use. Here are ten simple steps to freeze parsnips and enjoy them all year round!

1. Select your parsnips: Choose firm, fresh-looking parsnips without any blemishes or soft spots. Try to pick those that are similar in size, as this makes it easier to blanch and freeze them evenly.

2. Clean the parsnips: Rinse the parsnips under cold water to remove any soil or debris. You can use a vegetable brush to gently scrub the surface if necessary.

3. Peel the parsnips: Use a vegetable peeler or sharp knife to remove the outer skin from the parsnips. Discard the peels.

4. Cut the parsnips: Trim off the top and bottom of each parsnip, then slice them into even-sized pieces – about 1/2 inch thick – in the form of discs or batons.

5. Blanch the parsnips: Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil. Add the sliced parsnips to the boiling water and let them cook for 2-3 minutes. This helps preserve their color, flavor, and nutritional value during freezing.

6. Prepare an ice bath: Fill a large bowl with ice and water. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to carefully transfer the blanched parsnips from boiling water directly into the ice bath. Leave them in for 2-3 minutes.

7. Drain and dry well: Once cooled, drain the parsnips in a colander, giving them a gentle shake to remove excess water. Lay them out in a single layer on clean kitchen towels or paper towels and pat dry.

8. Pre-freeze the parsnips: Place the parsnips on a baking sheet or tray in a single layer, making sure they’re not touching each other. Put the tray in the freezer and let them freeze for 2-3 hours or until they become firm.

9. Package the parsnips: Once pre-frozen, transfer the parsnips into freezer-safe bags, boxes, or containers. Label and date each package so you can keep track of when they were frozen.

10. Store and enjoy: Frozen parsnips should be stored at 0°F (-18°C) or below. They will retain their quality for up to 8-12 months when stored correctly. When you’re ready to cook and enjoy them, simply remove as many as you need from the freezer and prepare according to your favorite recipe!

By following these ten easy steps, you’ll be able to enjoy delicious and healthy parsnips all year round! Freezing parsnips allows you to preserve their natural goodness and ensures that you always have them on hand for your favorite dishes.
