3 Ways to Tell When Blue Cheese Is Bad

Blue cheese is known for its distinct aroma and bold, tangy flavor that has the ability to elevate a dish’s character. While the blue mold in this cheese is intentional and perfectly safe to eat, it can still go bad over time. Ensuring you’re enjoying fresh and delicious blue cheese is essential to receive the maximum benefits of its flavor and texture. Here are three ways to determine if your blue cheese has gone bad.

1. Check the appearance:

Good blue cheese will have a creamy texture, even with its firm consistency. Veins of blue or green mold will run throughout the cheese. However, if you notice any different molds growing on your cheese – such as white or black patches – it may be a sign that your blue cheese is past its prime. Another visual cue could be excessive liquid pooling around the cheese. A little moisture is normal, but substantial amounts of liquid can signify spoiled cheese.

2. Assess the smell:

Typically, blue cheese has a strong smell due to rich microbial content—but don’t confuse this with it being bad. That said, there are some unmistakable odors indicating a problem. The smell of ammonia is one warning sign that should not be ignored. Similarly, if your blue cheese exhibits any particularly putrid or unnatural scents you haven’t experienced before, exercise caution, as it may be spoiled.

3. Evaluate the taste:

If you’re still not entirely sure whether your blue cheese has gone bad after examining its appearance and smell, cautiously taste a tiny portion of it (as long as you haven’t detected any strong warning signs from the previous steps). If the flavor is very bitter or sour – beyond what you would usually expect from blue cheese – it’s likely past its best.

By keeping these guidelines in mind, you can confidently navigate through the world of blue cheeses with an understanding of how to identify any past-their-prime contenders. Always trust your senses and prioritize food safety when dealing with perishable items such as cheese. Remember to store your blue cheese properly by wrapping it in parchment or wax paper, keeping it in a separate container in your fridge, and checking its freshness often so you may fully enjoy the potent flavor that this unique cheese has to offer.
