The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) is a widely-used financial metric that helps assess investment performance over time. It shows the average rate of return for an investment over a specific period, smoothing out fluctuations and providing a more accurate picture of overall growth. In this article, we will discuss how to calculate CAGR using Excel.

1. Gather your data

Before calculating CAGR in Excel, you’ll need data for the initial investment value, the end investment value, and the number of years between them. Collect this information before proceeding.

2. Open a new Excel worksheet

Open Microsoft Excel and create a new worksheet. Label three cells in a single column as follows:

A1: Initial Investment Value

A2: End Investment Value

A3: Number of Years

3. Input the values

Enter the corresponding values in each cell:

B1: Initial Investment Value (For example, $10,000)

B2: End Investment Value (For example, $25,000)

B3: Number of Years (For example, 5)

4. Applying the CAGR formula

The formula for calculating CAGR in Excel is:

CAGR = (End Value / Start Value) ^ (1 / Number of Years) – 1

In an empty cell, such as B5, type the following formula:

= (B2/B1)^(1/B3)-1

5. Format the result as a percentage

Click on B5 to select the cell with your result. On the ‘Home’ tab in Excel’s toolbar, click on the “%” icon to format the result as a percentage. Alternatively, right-click on the cell and choose ‘Format Cells,’ then select ‘Percentage’ from the list of options.

6. Review your results

The displayed value in cell B5 is now your calculated CAGR. For the example provided, the CAGR would be approximately 20.09%. This means that, on average, your investment grew at a rate of 20.09% per year over the given time frame.

Keep in mind that CAGR should be used as a general indicator of investment performance and not a guaranteed rate of return. Other factors such as market conditions, risk profile, and fluctuations in interest rates can impact an investment’s actual growth.

By following these simple steps, you can easily calculate CAGR using Microsoft Excel. This valuable tool can help you make more informed decisions when evaluating past performance and planning for future investments.
