3 Ways to Make Your Own Glazing Medium for Oil Painting

As an oil painter, you might be looking for ways to create beautiful depth and luminosity in your artwork. One effective method to achieve this is by using a glazing medium, which allows you to apply thin, transparent layers of oil paint to your canvas. This technique can add depth, dimension, and a glowing quality to your finished piece. Glazing mediums can be purchased commercially, but it is also simple and cost-effective to create your own. In this article, we will share three different methods to make your own glazing medium for oil painting.

1. Traditional Linseed Oil Glaze

The most traditional method for making a glazing medium is by mixing linseed oil with a solvent like odorless mineral spirits or turpentine (be aware of the fumes produced). This creates a clear and smooth mixture that dries relatively quickly when applied thinly.

Ingredients:

– Linseed oil

– Odorless mineral spirits or turpentine

Instructions:

1. Combine equal parts linseed oil and solvent in a clean container.

2. Stir the mixture thoroughly until it reaches a uniform consistency.

3. Apply the medium with a brush or palet knife to the desired areas of your painting, then gently wipe away any excess with a lint-free cloth.

2. Stand Oil Glaze

Stand oil is another popular choice for creating glazing mediums. It is essentially an aged and thickened linseed oil that dries more slowly than traditional linseed oil but creates a glossy, durable finish.

Ingredients:

– Stand oil

– Odorless mineral spirits or turpentine

Instructions:

1. Combine two parts stand oil with one part solvent in a clean container.

2. Mix the ingredients well until they form a smooth consistency.

3. Apply the stand oil-based medium directly onto your painting using a brush or palette knife.

3. Alkyd Glaze

Alkyd mediums are a modern alternative to traditional oil mediums. They are made from synthetic resins and tend to dry more quickly than linseed oil or stand oil-based glazes. This makes them an excellent choice for artists who want the benefits of glazing without the longer drying times.

Ingredients:

– Alkyd medium (e.g., Liquin or Galkyd)

– Odorless mineral spirits or turpentine

Instructions:

1. Combine equal parts alkyd medium and solvent in a clean container.

2. Stir the mixture well until it reaches a homogeneous consistency.

3. Use a brush or palette knife to apply the alkyd glaze to your painting.

In conclusion, making your own glazing medium for oil painting can be easy and cost-effective using any of these three methods. Experiment with different formulations to find the one that works best for you and your artwork. By incorporating this technique into your art practice, you can add depth, dimension, and a beautiful luminous quality to your paintings.
