How to calculate percentage yield in organic chemistry

Percentage yield is an essential concept in organic chemistry, particularly when analyzing the outcome of chemical reactions. It enables chemists to determine how successful a particular reaction has been and ultimately helps them optimize the process for higher yields. In this article, we will discuss the steps to calculate percentage yield in organic chemistry.

What is Percentage Yield?

Percentage yield refers to the ratio of the actual amount of a product formed in a chemical reaction relative to the maximum possible amount that could be produced based on the starting materials or reactants. It is expressed as a percentage, and understanding how to calculate it is crucial for evaluating the efficiency and success of a reaction.

Steps to Calculate Percentage Yield in Organic Chemistry

1. Write down the balanced chemical equation

The first step in calculating percentage yield is to write down the balanced chemical equation for the reaction being studied. This will help you understand the mole ratios between reactants and products.

2. Identify the limiting reactant

The limiting reactant is the substance that will be completely consumed in the reaction, thus determining how much product can be formed. To identify it, compare the moles of each reactant present, and find which one runs out first according to their stoichiometric ratios.

3. Calculate theoretical yield

Theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be generated from a given quantity of reactants according to stoichiometric ratios. To calculate it, use the number of moles of limiting reactant and convert it into moles of desired product using mole-mole relationships from your balanced chemical equation. Then, convert moles of product into grams using its molar mass.

4. Measure actual yield

The actual yield is the amount of desired product that is actually obtained from a chemical reaction as observed and measured by experimental methods such as weighing or titration.

5. Calculate percentage yield

Finally, divide the actual yield by the theoretical yield and multiply by 100 to obtain the percentage yield. The formula can be written as:

Percentage Yield = (Actual Yield / Theoretical Yield) x 100
