Understanding how to calculate percentages is a fundamental skill applicable in various aspects of life, such as calculating discounts, managing finances, determining success rates, and analyzing data. This article will guide you through the process of calculating percentages using a simple formula.

The Basic Percentage Formula:

The basic percentage formula can be expressed as follows:

Percentage = (Part / Whole) * 100

Here, the Part represents a portion of the whole amount or total, and the whole refers to the entire quantity that’s under consideration.

Let’s dive deeper into understanding this formula by explaining it through some examples.

Example 1: Determining Discounts

Let’s say there’s a 25% discount on a sweater priced at $80. To find out how much you save on the discounted price, follow these steps:

Step 1: Write down the given numbers

Discount Percentage = 25%

Whole (original price) = $80

Step 2: Apply the percentage formula

Percentage = (Part / Whole) * 100

=> 25% = (Part / $80)*100

Step 3: Solve for Part

$20=(25/100) * $80

Discounted Price = Original Price – Discounted Amount

Discounted Price= $80 – $20 = $60

So, after applying the discount percentage, you save $20 and pay only $60 for the sweater.

Example 2: Calculating Exam Scores

Imagine a student scored 45 points on a test with a maximum of 50 points possible. To calculate their percentage score, follow these steps:

Step 1: Write down the given numbers

Part (score obtained) = 45 points

Whole (total points available) = 50 points

Step 2: Apply the percentage formula

Percentage = (Part / Whole) * 100

Percentage= (45/50) * 100

Step 3: Calculate the result

Percentage= 90%

The student achieved a score of 90% on the test.

Calculating percentage increase and decrease:

To calculate the percentage increase or decrease between two numbers, you can use the following formula:

Percentage change = ((New Value – Old Value) / Old Value) * 100

If the result is positive, it indicates a percentage increase, and if it’s negative, it suggests a percentage decrease.

In conclusion, understanding how to calculate percentages using the basic formula is essential in everyday situations. From determining discounts to analyzing financial growth or decline, this valuable skill is widely applicable. Make sure to practice your calculations with various examples to grasp this concept better and improve your problem-solving abilities.
