Evaporated milk is a versatile pantry staple that can be used in various recipes, from sweet desserts to rich and creamy soups. Although it’s widely available at grocery stores, making evaporated milk at home is an excellent way to save money and control the quality of ingredients. In this article, we’ll explore three different methods for making evaporated milk right in your own kitchen.

1. Traditional Stovetop Method

The traditional stovetop method for making evaporated milk involves simmering regular milk until it reduces in volume.

Ingredients:

– 2 cups of whole milk

Instructions:

  1. Pour 2 cups of whole milk into a heavy-bottomed saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the milk to a gentle simmer.
  3. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low, making sure that the milk does not boil over.
  4. Continue to cook the milk on low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching, until it has reduced by half (approximately 1 cup). This process may take around 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the evaporated milk to cool before transferring it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

2. Slow Cooker Method

This convenient method of making evaporated milk requires minimal supervision and yields consistent results.

Ingredients:

– 4 cups of whole milk

Instructions:

  1. Pour 4 cups of whole milk into your slow cooker.
  2. Set your slow cooker on low and cook for approximately 8 hours or overnight, stirring occasionally if possible.
  3. Once reduced by half, turn off the slow cooker and allow the evaporated milk to cool.
  4. Transfer the evaporated milk into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

3. Oven Method

The oven method is ideal for making larger quantities of evaporated milk with a more concentrated flavor.

Ingredients:

– 4 cups of whole milk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C).
  2. Pour 4 cups of whole milk into an oven-safe shallow dish or casserole dish.
  3. Place the dish in the preheated oven and cook for 2-2.5 hours, stirring occasionally if possible, until the milk has reduced by half.
  4. Remove from the oven and let the evaporated milk cool, then transfer it to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

In conclusion, making evaporated milk at home is simple and requires just a single ingredient: whole milk. Choose the method that best suits your needs and enjoy using your homemade evaporated milk in a variety of delicious recipes!
