How to Calculate SEER Rating

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a metric used to measure the energy efficiency of air conditioning units and heat pumps. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficiently the unit operates, which can help you save on energy costs. If you are considering purchasing a new air conditioning unit or want to assess the efficiency of your existing one, learning how to calculate its SEER rating is essential. This article will guide you through the process step-by-step.

What is SEER Rating?

SEER is calculated as a ratio of the total cooling output (in BTUs – British Thermal Units) provided by an air conditioner or heat pump over a typical cooling season, divided by the total electrical energy input (in watt-hours) during the same period. In simple terms, it measures the average cooling capacity of a unit per unit of energy consumed. Higher SEER ratings mean better energy efficiency and more savings on your energy bills.

Step 1: Determine Your Cooling Output

To calculate your air conditioner’s cooling output, you will need to know the following information:

– The rated BTU/hour (British Thermal Units per hour), which can be found on the unit itself or in its user manual.

– The total hours of operation during a typical cooling season.

Multiply these numbers together to find your cooling output.

Total Cooling Output = Rated BTU/Hour × Total Hours of Operation

Step 2: Determine Your Electrical Input

To calculate your air conditioner’s electrical input, you will need to know:

– The rated watts consumed by your air conditioner, which can be found on the unit itself or in its user manual.

– The total hours of operation during a typical cooling season.

Multiply these numbers together to find your electrical input.

Total Electrical Input = Rated Watts × Total Hours of Operation

Step 3: Calculate Your SEER Rating

Now that you have your cooling output and electrical input, you can calculate your SEER rating using this simple formula:

SEER Rating = Total Cooling Output ÷ Total Electrical Input

Following these steps, you can easily calculate the SEER rating for your air conditioning unit. Keep in mind that the higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient and cost-saving your air conditioner will be.

Conclusion

Understanding the SEER rating of your air conditioning system can help you make informed decisions about purchasing a new unit or maintaining and optimizing the performance of your current one. By learning how to calculate the SEER rating, you can compare different models and choose an efficient unit that meets your needs while reducing your energy consumption and saving money over time.
