3 Ways to Cut Plexiglass

Plexiglass, also known as acrylic glass, is a versatile and durable material often used as an alternative to traditional glass. It is lightweight, shatterproof, and offers a high level of clarity, making it perfect for various applications such as displays, art frames, and DIY projects. Cutting plexiglass can be a bit tricky if you’ve never worked with it before. In this article, we’ll go over three ways to cut plexiglass that will ensure clean, smooth results.

1. Using a Scoring Tool

One of the simplest methods for cutting plexiglass is by scoring it with a scoring tool or utility knife. Follow these steps:

– Start by placing the plexiglass on a flat surface and using a straight edge to mark the cutting line.

– Attach a clamped straightedge as a guide parallel to the line you want to cut.

– With steady pressure, slide the scoring tool or utility knife along the cutting line while pressing firmly on the straightedge guide.

– After scoring the plexiglass 5-10 times (depending on thickness), position the cutline over the edge of your worktable.

– Apply firm, downward pressure along the scored line until the piece snaps off.

– Sand any rough edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

2. Using a Table Saw or Circular Saw

For larger cuts or thicker sheets of plexiglass, using a table saw or circular saw equipped with a fine-toothed blade can produce accurate results.

– Before cutting, ensure your saw’s blade is suitable for cutting acrylic materials. Look for high tooth count plastic cutting blades.

– Attach a straightedge guide on your work surface to guide your cuts and minimize wobbling.

– Apply painter’s tape along both sides of your cut line to prevent chipping.

– Set up adequate support for both ends of the plexiglass as you make the cut.

– Slowly push the plexiglass through the saw blade, maintaining a steady speed while applying gentle pressure as needed.

– After making the cut, remove any rough edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

3. Using a Jigsaw

A jigsaw is an excellent option for cutting curves, circles, and intricate designs in plexiglass.

– Choose a blade designed for cutting acrylic or plastic and ensure it has a high tooth count.

– Mark your desired pattern on the protective film of your plexiglass using a permanent marker.

– Clamp the plexiglass securely to your work surface.

– Begin cutting along the marked lines at a moderate speed and maintain pressure while moving slowly around corners or following curves.

– Pause frequently to blow away dust that may accumulate, which helps prevent melting and keeps your cut line visible.

– Sand any rough edges with fine-grit sandpaper after completing your cut.

Conclusion

These three methods each offer an effective way to cut plexiglass, depending on your specific needs and project requirements. Whichever method you choose, be sure to wear proper safety gear such as protective eyewear and gloves as well as a dust mask when handling power tools. With practice and care, you’ll achieve clean, precise cuts that’ll perfect your next plexiglass project.
