3 Ways to Clean a Menstrual Cup

Introduction:

Menstrual cups have become a popular alternative to disposable pads and tampons. They are reusable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective for those who use them during their period. However, just like any other menstrual product, proper cleaning is essential to ensure hygiene and avoid infections. In this article, we will discuss three different ways to clean a menstrual cup.

1. Boil it in water:

One of the most effective cleaning methods for a menstrual cup is boiling it in water. This process not only removes any residue but also kills any germs or bacteria that may be trapped inside the cup.

– Fill a pot with enough water to completely immerse the menstrual cup.

– Put the menstrual cup in the pot and make sure it’s fully submerged in the water.

– Boil the water for 5-10 minutes.

– Carefully remove the cup using a pair of tongs or a spoon (avoid using your bare hands which can cause burns) and let it air dry on a clean cloth or paper towel.

Be careful not to over-boil the menstrual cup as this can cause damage or reduce its lifespan.

2. Use a gentle soap:

Another option for cleaning your menstrual cup is to use a gentle, fragrance-free soap specifically designed for menstrual cups or any other mild unscented soap.

– Rinse your cup thoroughly with cold water first to remove any blood or debris.

– Rub an adequate amount of soap onto the surface of the wet menstrual cup, paying extra attention to any grooves or holes where residues might accumulate.

– Be sure to rinse off all soap residue under cool running water after washing.

– Finally, allow your cleaned menstrual cup to air dry before storing it in its case.

3. Cleaning tablets and wipes:

Some menstrual cup companies offer special cleaning tablets and wipes specifically designed for disinfecting and sanitizing menstrual cups. These can be quite handy for on-the-go cleaning or when you don’t have access to boiling water or soap.

– For cleaning tablets, dissolve the tablet in water as per the manufacturer’s instructions and soak the menstrual cup for the recommended amount of time.

– After soaking, thoroughly rinse your cup under running water and ensure there is no residue left behind.

– For cleaning wipes, simply wipe the interior and exterior of your menstrual cup following the manufacturer’s guidelines, then rinse under running water.

Conclusion:

Maintaining the cleanliness of your menstrual cup is crucial to prevent infections and ensure a healthy menstrual experience. Boiling in water, using gentle soap or opting for specialized cleaning tablets and wipes are three effective methods for cleaning a menstrual cup. Remember to always store your clean, dry menstrual cup in a well-ventilated case or container until its next use.
