How Does MyFitnessPal Calculate Calories? A Comprehensive Guide

MyFitnessPal has become a popular app among fitness enthusiasts and individuals seeking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. One of the major features of the app is its ability to calculate the number of calories a user consumes through food intake and expends through physical activities. In this article, we will discuss how MyFitnessPal calculates calories in detail.

1. Food Intake Calculation

To accurately track calorie intake, MyFitnessPal allows users to log their meals throughout the day. The app has an extensive food database with over six million options that include restaurant items, whole foods, and packaged products, complete with their nutritional information.

When you add a food item to your diary, the app automatically calculates the total calories consumed based on the serving size and quantity that you input. As you continue adding items throughout the day, MyFitnessPal aggregates this data to provide you with a running total of your calorie intake.

2. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

MyFitnessPal takes into account your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) when calculating daily calorie expenditure. BMR refers to the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic physiological functions at rest, such as breathing and maintaining body temperature.

The app calculates BMR using the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation:

For men: BMR = 10 x weight (in kg) + 6.25 x height (in cm) – 5 x age (years) + 5

For women: BMR = 10 x weight (in kg) + 6.25 x height (in cm) – 5 x age (years) – 161

3. Calorie Burn Estimate

Boasting a significant database of various exercises and activities, MyFitnessPal allows users to record their workouts and track their calorie burn. The app uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent) values for each activity to estimate the calories expended during the workout. MET values represent the energy cost of an activity compared to a resting state.

The formula used to calculate calorie burn is:

Calories Burned = duration (in minutes) x MET value x weight (in kg) / 200

As you log workouts, MyFitnessPal adds the estimated calorie burn from each activity to your total daily calories expended.

4. Adjusting for Activity Level

To provide a personalized calorie goal, MyFitnessPal factors in your activity level throughout the day, not just during exercise. When setting up your account, you’ll be asked to choose your daily activity level, which can range from sedentary to very active. The app then adjusts your total daily calories expended by a predetermined percentage based on your selection.

5. Daily Calorie Goal

Finally, MyFitnessPal computes a daily calorie goal that factors in your desired weight change pace (e.g., lose 1 pound per week). The app calculates how much of a calorie deficit or surplus you need every day and adjusts your total daily calorie limit accordingly.

By combining all these factors, MyFitnessPal offers users an effective tool for tracking their caloric intake and expenditure, allowing them to make informed decisions about their diet and exercise routines. With this information at hand, users can confidently work towards their fitness goals and achieve a healthy lifestyle.
