The Average American Spends Over 13 Hours A Day Using Digital Media—Here’s What They’re Streaming

In recent years, digital media consumption has skyrocketed, with the average American now spending over 13 hours a day using various digital devices. This increase in screen time is driven by the growing accessibility and availability of high-quality content, from social media and streaming services to online gaming and e-books. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the most popular platforms and genres that Americans are streaming today.

Top Streaming Services

Netflix remains the go-to streaming service for many, with its ever-evolving library of movies, TV shows, and original content. According to recent studies, nearly 73% of US streaming users have a Netflix subscription. Following closely behind is Amazon Prime Video, with around 52% of users. Hulu and Disney+ have also become heavy hitters in the industry, each attracting about 34% and 32% of streaming users, respectively.

Popular Streaming Genres

Binge-worthy drama series remain a staple for American audiences. Gripping storylines like those found in ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Stranger Things’, and ‘Money Heist’ keep viewers hooked for hours on end. However, comedies like ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ and ‘The Office’ provide much-needed respite from the intensity of suspense-filled dramas.

Reality shows have surged in popularity, with series like ‘Tiger King’ and ‘The Circle’ captivating audiences across the country. Additionally, documentary-style programming such as ‘Making a Murderer’ has attracted true-crime enthusiasts with its blend of storytelling and real-life events.

Children’s programming is another category that has seen growth in recent years. With platforms like Disney+ offering extensive libraries of family favorites like ‘The Lion King’ and new originals such as ‘The Mandalorian’, it’s no surprise that more households are tuning in for all-ages content.

Social Media Streams

On social media platforms, users are increasingly turning to live broadcasts, temporary stories, and even podcasts for their digital fix. TikTok has emerged as a popular app for consuming short, entertaining video content, while Instagram and Snapchat continue to dominate the landscape of ‘stories’ that disappear after 24 hours.

Podcasts and Audiobooks

The growing popularity of podcasts is indisputable. With over 2 million active podcasts available covering a wide range of topics, it’s clear that Americans have found a love for audio storytelling. Similarly, audiobooks are enjoying a surge in popularity as people look for ways to consume literature on-the-go.

In Conclusion

It’s evident that the average American’s appetite for digital media shows no signs of slowing down. As technology continues to evolve and new platforms emerge, we can only expect these consumption habits to increase even further. With an array of content now available at our fingertips, it is crucial that we balance our screen time with other activities and prioritize our mental and physical well-being.
