Introduction

In September 2018, Apple introduced iOS 12, the latest update to its operating system for iPhones. Among various enhancements and optimizations, there’s one feature that stands out – the virtual tape measure. This innovative application turns your iPhone into a virtual measuring tool, allowing users to measure objects and distances with remarkable accuracy. Let’s dive deeper into how this feature works and its potential applications.

A Breakthrough in Mobile Augmented Reality

The virtual tape measure lies within iOS 12’s Measure app, which utilizes Apple’s advanced augmented reality (AR) technology known as ARKit. The updated ARKit 2.0 boasts improved accuracy and object recognition features enabling the iPhone to acquire spatial information with minimal lag.

Using the Measure app is simple. Users just need to open the application and point their iPhone at an object or space they want to measure, and it will automatically detect the dimensions. The app then displays real-time measurements in both imperial and metric units.

Implications of Virtual Tape Measure

iOS 12’s virtual tape measure has various practical implications that go beyond standard home use. Here are a few notable examples:

1. Interior Design: The furniture-arranging process becomes hassle-free as users can quickly determine whether a piece will fit a particular space without having to physically move it.

2. Construction & Renovation: Contractors can use it for quick measurements without having to carry extra equipment.

3. Online shopping: Retailers may enable customers to virtually measure products before purchasing, ensuring they select the right size and avoid returns.

4. Artwork & Framing: Art collectors can effortlessly find out whether their desired artwork will fit in a specific location on their wall.

5. Education: Teachers can incorporate this technology into lessons about measurements, geometry, and real-world applications.

Limitations & Future Developments

While iOS 12’s virtual tape measure is undoubtedly innovative, it should be noted that the Measure app might not be as precise as traditional measuring tools, especially for extensive measurements. Small discrepancies may be observed, but they will likely improve with continuous updates.

As the technology advances, more applications for augmented reality will continue to emerge and impact everyday life. Companies like Apple are investing in AR advancements, opening doors for additional features and functionalities in mobile devices.

Conclusion

With the introduction of iOS 12, Apple has taken a significant step forward in making augmented reality an essential part of our daily lives. The virtual tape measure is just one example of how this technology can bring convenience and increased efficiency across various industries. As we continue to witness the evolution of AR technology, we can look forward to more groundbreaking developments on our mobile devices in the near future.
