What Is N-Key Rollover in Mechanical Keyboards?

Mechanical keyboards have become quite popular amongst gamers and PC enthusiasts because of their robust build quality, tactile feedback, and better key stability compared to membrane-based keyboards. But what sets apart mechanical keyboards from membrane ones in terms of functionality is its n-key rollover feature.

N-key rollover, commonly abbreviated as NKRO, is a functionality present in mechanical keyboards which means that multiple keys can be pressed simultaneously and each keypress is registered by the computer. In simpler terms, it allows you to press as many keys as you want at the same time without any missed keystrokes.

This feature is particularly useful in scenarios where you need to execute multiple commands in a game or when typing fast. In a standard membrane-based keyboard, if you press too many keys at once, certain keystrokes can be missed or may not register at all.

N-key rollover is generally achieved through two methods: hardware-based and software-based.

Hardware-based NKRO keyboards use diodes, which act as one-way electric gates, to ensure that each keypress is registered independently. This means that each keypress generates its own electrical signal, which the computer can interpret. This method is found in higher-end mechanical keyboards and is known for its reliability and precision.

Software-based NKRO keyboards use specialized drivers to ensure that each keypress is registered independently. It’s important to note that some software-based NKRO keyboards have a limit of how many keys can be pressed simultaneously, usually up to 6 keys. This is known as 6-key rollover or 6KRO.

It’s worth noting that not all keyboards come with the same level of n-key rollover. Some keyboards that are advertised as mechanical may not even have the functionality, so it’s important to do your research before purchasing one.

In conclusion, N-key rollover is an important feature to consider while purchasing a mechanical keyboard. It ensures that your keystrokes are accurately registered, making it a reliable and essential feature for gamers and professionals alike. Next time when looking for a keyboard, make sure to check the level of n-key rollover you need to fulfill your requirements.
