Once It Was an Internet Giant—But Who Owns AOL Today?

AOL, short for America Online, was once a powerhouse in the internet world. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it was the go-to for accessing the internet and email for millions of people. But as competition grew and technology changed, the company struggled to keep up. In 2015, it was acquired by Verizon Communications for $4.4 billion. But who owns AOL today?

Verizon still owns AOL today, but it’s no longer the same company it once was. When Verizon acquired AOL, they were primarily interested in the company’s advertising technology. AOL had developed a programmatic advertising platform that allowed marketers to use data to target specific audiences. This technology was seen as valuable to Verizon as they looked to expand their mobile advertising capabilities.

Since the acquisition, AOL has been integrated into Verizon’s media division, which also includes Yahoo (which Verizon acquired in 2017) and other media properties. Under this umbrella, AOL’s advertising technology has been used to launch Verizon’s own advertising platform, Verizon Media.

While AOL may not have the same level of name recognition or influence it once did, it continues to play a role in the online world through its advertising technology. And while its value may be more focused on its technological capabilities than its brand name, AOL remains a part of the internet landscape.
