Why Netflix Canceled 1899 After Just One Season

Netflix has recently made headlines for canceling its latest original series, 1899, after just one season. The show, which promised to be a historical thriller set on a transatlantic journey to the United States, boasted a star-studded cast and was heavily promoted by the streaming giant. However, despite all the hype, something went wrong with the series, leading to its eventual cancellation.

One of the main reasons behind the cancellation of 1899 is the show’s high production costs. According to several reports, the series was one of the most expensive productions in Netflix’s history, with each episode costing up to $16 million to produce. This was mainly due to the complex special effects and the extensive use of virtual sets to create a historically accurate representation of the ship and its surroundings. Despite the show’s lavish production values, it failed to get the expected traction among viewers, making it difficult for Netflix to justify the high production costs.

Another major factor that led to the cancellation of 1899 was the show’s narrative structure. The series was planned to be an anthology, with each season featuring a different story and cast. However, this structure failed to resonate with viewers, who were left unsatisfied with the show’s open-ended finale. Unlike other Netflix shows like Stranger Things or The Witcher, which have built up dedicated fan followings, 1899 failed to create a loyal audience base, which contributed to its cancellation.

Moreover, the series was touted as a multilingual show, with its cast and crew hailing from various countries. While this ambitious premise was appreciated by some, others criticized the show’s use of unnatural dialogue and poor translations, which made it difficult for viewers to fully engage with the story. This, coupled with the show’s slow pacing, made it a hard sell for the viewers who had been eagerly waiting for its release.

Finally, the COVID-19 pandemic also played a significant role in the cancellation of 1899. The pandemic caused significant disruptions in the production schedules for several Netflix shows, forcing the streaming platform to prioritize those shows that were performing well. The pandemic situation also made it difficult to promote the show and generate word-of-mouth buzz, which is essential for the success of new shows.
