8 Ways to Remove a Security Tag from Clothing

Security tags are an effective anti-theft measure used by retailers worldwide, ensuring that clothing remains on store shelves and not taken without payment. However, there may be times when a security tag is accidentally left on a garment after purchase, forcing the buyer to find creative ways to remove it at home. Here are eight methods for removing security tags from clothing safely and quickly.

1. Rubber Bands Method:

Place several rubber bands around the narrow end of the security tag. Pull the rubber bands tightly, and the pressure will eventually force the pin to come free from its housing.

2. Freezer Method:

Place the garment with the attached security tag in a plastic bag and seal it tightly. Put the bag in the freezer for a couple of hours. Once frozen, take the clothing out of the freezer and use a hammer to gently break apart the tag.

3. Pliers and Flathead Screwdriver Method:

Using needle-nose pliers, grip one end of the pin holding the tag together securely and twist it. Simultaneously, insert a flathead screwdriver under the edge of the tag near where you’re gripping with the pliers, lifting it gently until it separates.

4. Fork Method:

Slide two forks between the security tag’s housing and its attached pin. Use these forks as levers to pry apart the two components until they snap apart.

5. Heat Method:

Hold a lighter or hairdryer near the low-melting point plastic section of the security tag, focusing on wherever there appears to be glue or bonding material. Once sufficiently heated, gently pry apart using pliers or any other available tools.

6. Hand Saw or Rotary Tool Method:

Carefully cut through one side of the plastic housing using a small hand saw or rotary tool outfitted with a cutting disc attachment. Be mindful of avoiding direct contact with your clothes while cutting through, as this may cause damage to the garment.

7. Magnet Method:

Use a powerful neodymium magnet in close proximity to the magnetic locking mechanism of the security tag. Carefully slide the magnet around the tag until the pin is released.

8. Return to the Store:

If none of these methods work, or you’re worried about damaging your new purchase, returning to the store of purchase is encouraged. Present your receipt as proof, and request assistance from an employee who can safely remove it with their specialized tools.

Regardless of which method you choose, it is crucial to exercise caution when removing security tags from clothing. Always prioritize personal and garment safety in order to enjoy your newly-purchased apparel without blemishes or damage.
