7 Ways to Deal With Conflict

In any relationship, be it personal or professional, conflicts are inevitable. However, how we handle and resolve these conflicts plays a significant role in maintaining healthy relationships and ensuring clear communication. Here are seven effective ways to deal with conflict:

1. Acknowledge the conflict: The first step in solving any conflict is acknowledging that it exists. Ignoring or avoiding the issue only prolongs the problem and can even potentially lead to a bigger misunderstanding or dispute. Be open to discussing the issue and finding a resolution.

2. Listen actively: Active listening requires focusing on what the other person is saying without interrupting them and summarizing key points to show that you understand their perspective. This helps establish trust between both parties, creating an environment optimal for constructive dialogue.

3. Communicate assertively: Communicate your thoughts and feelings assertively without attacking or blaming others. Use “I” statements (e.g., “I feel frustrated when…”) to express your emotions and thoughts in a non-threatenting manner.

4. Demonstrate empathy: Before responding in any conflict, put yourself in the shoes of the other person, and try to understand their viewpoint. This will help you approach the solution more rationally and with compassion, which often leads to better results.

5. Identify common ground: Try to determine shared aims or interests for both parties involved in the conflict. Focusing on common goals can create motivation to work collaboratively towards a resolution.

6. Compromise: In most conflicts, both parties have to give up something to reach an agreement—a compromise involves finding a middle ground where both participants can feel satisfied with the resolution.

7. Seek assistance if needed: If you’re unable to resolve a conflict on your own, consider seeking help from a neutral third party, such as a mediator, counselor, or therapist who can provide unbiased insights and suggestions for effective communication strategies.

Learning how to deal with conflict effectively is essential for the success of any relationship, both personal and professional. By employing these seven strategies, you can confidently approach conflicts, helping to build strong connections with others and fostering clearer communication.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
