Sonic the Hedgehog series is renowned for its high-speed action and vibrant levels, but it’s also known for its cast of memorable characters, including the notorious villain, Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. While he is usually the antagonist in most Sonic games, there are a few where he shines as a playable character, allowing players to experience the other side of Sonic’s coin.

1.Sonic Adventure 2

In “Sonic Adventure 2,” players were treated to a thrilling storyline that included segments where they could step into the shoes of Dr. Eggman himself. Piloting his mech, players could blast through enemies and obstacles with satisfying firepower, revealing a different gameplay experience compared to the series’ standard fast-paced running action.

2.Sonic Riders Series

The “Sonic Riders” series introduced fans to high-speed races on hoverboards and showcased various characters from the franchise vie for victory, including Dr. Eggman. Players got to enjoy Eggman’s unique riding style and gadgets, adding to the diversity and strategic elements in these exciting racing games.

3.Sonic R

While racing games are relatively rare in the Sonic universe, “Sonic R” made a splash with Dr. Eggman as one of the racers competing on foot against Sonic and friends. His ability to hover over obstacles provided a unique advantage that differentiated his racing style from others.

4.Sonic the Fighters

Diving into fighting genre, “Sonic the Fighters” allowed players to fight as Dr. Eggman in his robot suit towards unlocking Metal Sonic and heading towards the Death Egg II. Although not initially playable in the arcade version, subsequent releases have included him as a full member of the roster.

5.Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Series

The sports crossover series sees Dr. Eggman competing in various Olympic events alongside Sonic and Mario characters. His surprising agility and strength make him a formidable opponent across multiple disciplines.

6.LEGO Dimensions

In “LEGO Dimensions,” with its unique crossover appeal featuring multiple franchises, players got another chance to control Dr. Eggman alongside characters from completely different universes—showcasing his mischievous antics in LEGO form as he interacted with an expansive multiverse.

7.Shadow the Hedgehog

This title offers an indirect method of manipulating Dr. Eggman’s actions within certain levels rather than controlling him directly; players can align with or oppose his plans depending on their choices throughout Shadow’s morally flexible journey.

Each game allows fans to engage with this iconic villain in a new light—whether it’s through direct control or influencing his nefarious schemes—providing a twist on the traditional gameplay found in Sonic titles and giving Dr. Eggman his due as one of gaming’s most enduring antagonists.
