Birdwatchers rejoice as the chill sets in, because it’s a fantastic season to observe a bevy of birds that are easier to spot amidst the leafless trees and often congregate around warmer spots. If you’re in the southern United States and looking to indulge in some winter birdwatching, here are seven trails that you should definitely add to your itinerary:

1.Congaree National Park, South Carolina

Prowl along the boardwalks of Congaree National Park to glimpse some of the overwintering warblers. With one of the highest canopies in the world, this park offers a diverse habitat for bird species like the Barred Owl and Pileated Woodpecker.

2.Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Florida

This ancient forest provides a close-up view of wading birds, Painted Buntings, and perhaps even the elusive Wood Stork. The Bald Cypress trees create a stunning scenery while you stroll along the 2.25 miles of boardwalk.

3.Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, Texas

Stretching through several wildlife refuges, this extensive trail offers opportunities to see rare species such as the Whooping Crane along with hundreds of migratory birds flocking to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.

4.Cape Henlopen State Park, Delaware

Offering more than just a winter birding trail, Cape Henlopen’s coastal location attracts seabirds and shorebirds like Snow Buntings and Purple Sandpipers that often aren’t seen inland.

5.Everglades National Park, Florida

In the river of grass, you’ll find herons, egrets, and Roseate Spoonbills amongst many other species. The Anhinga Trail is particularly noteworthy for its up-close bird-watching opportunities.

6.Cheraw State Park, South Carolina

Along with its famous cypress wetlands which are a magnet for waterfowl in winter, Cheraw State Park also offers pine woods that are home to Red-cockaded Woodpeckers and Brown-headed Nuthatches.

7.Dauphin Island, Alabama

Recognized as one of the premiere birding spots in the nation, especially during migration season, Dauphin Island is an essential stop for any birder looking to check off Gulf Coast specialties from their list.

As temperatures cool down south, these trails heat up with birdwatching activities. Whether you’re interested in witnessing migratory wonders or capturing pristine photographs of resident birds against winter backdrops, consider these seven trails must-visits for your winter birding adventures.
