6 of the world’s best short train journeys

The world’s best short train journeys offer travelers the opportunity to experience breathtaking landscapes and regional charm within a matter of hours. Here are six of the best short train trips that belong on every traveler’s bucket list:

1.The Glacier Express, Switzerland

Known as the slowest express train in the world, the Glacier Express takes passengers through the Swiss Alps, connecting Zermatt and St. Moritz over a scenic eight-hour journey. Despite being a daylong ride, it is still considered ‘short’ because it allows people to soak in panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, deep gorges, and untouched alpine forests in a single day.

2.Flåm Railway, Norway

The 20-kilometer journey from Myrdal to Flåm has been touted as one of the most beautiful train rides worldwide and only takes about an hour. It descends nearly 900 meters, featuring the majestic Kjosfossen waterfall, dramatic cliffs, and fjord vistas that are absolutely stunning.

3.TranzAlpine, New Zealand

New Zealand’s TranzAlpine is a five-hour coast-to-coast journey from Christchurch to Greymouth on the South Island’s west coast. The trip showcases New Zealand’s diverse landscape, including the Canterbury Plains, Waimakariri River gorges and the Southern Alps.

4.The GoldenPass Line, Switzerland

Another Swiss gem, this shorter line takes passengers from Montreux overlooking Lake Geneva through Gstaad to Interlaken in three hours. Spectacular vineyards, classic Swiss chalets and mountain scenes are trademark views on this picturesque route.

5.West Highland Line, Scotland

Linking Glasgow to Mallaig, the trip spans just over five hours and crosses through Scotland’s wild west coast. The Harry Potter films made parts of this route famous – especially the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct – offering spellbinding views of lochs, moors and mountains along its path.

6.The Royal Gorge Route Railroad, USA

Colorado’s Royal Gorge Route Railroad might be one of America’s most stunning historic rail excursions. The two-hour ride runs along the Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge canyon walls peaking over 1,000 feet high at some points – a breathtaking vision welcomed by all aboard.

Each journey presents travelers with an incomparable window into nature’s artistry and human ingenuity – proof that some of life’s most precious experiences don’t require long hauls but can be found in a brief rail journey. Whether you have a penchant for heights or history or simply want to marvel at Mother Nature’s handiwork from the comfort of your seat, these train journeys promise not only a destination but also an unforgettable experience en route.
