Platformer video games have always held a special place in the hearts of gamers, offering a blend of jumping puzzles, thrilling chases, and universe exploration that is often as challenging as it is entertaining. Over the years, many beloved platformers have gotten modern makeovers that rekindle our nostalgia while showcasing how far gaming technology has come. Below are six of the best platformer remakes that not only pay homage to the originals but also stand on their own as magnificent examples of the genre.

 1. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

This compilation remake of the first three games in the Crash Bandicoot series truly does justice to the original PlayStation classics. With completely overhauled graphics, a fresh soundtrack, and upgraded gameplay mechanics, it’s no wonder this remake won the hearts of new and returning fans alike.

 2. Shadow of the Colossus (2018)

Though not a traditional platformer, “Shadow of the Colossus” is renowned for its climbing mechanics and epic boss encounters that exude platforming sequences. The 2018 remake offers breathtaking visuals and vastly improved controls that have revitalized this cult-classic for a new audience without losing any of its original grandeur.

 3. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Originally released for the Wii U and later revamped for the Nintendo Switch, “Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze” combines traditional platforming with robust HD graphics and additional content. This remake energizes old-school Donkey Kong with modern polish that shines on Nintendo’s hybrid console.

 4. Spyro Reignited Trilogy

Another trilogy remaster, Spyro Reignited breathes new life into everyone’s favorite purple dragon’s adventures. The vibrant worlds are beautifully recreated with rich detail, all while retaining the simple charm and engaging gameplay of Spyro’s original exploits.

 5. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels Deluxe

With this remake, Nintendo transformed what was originally known as “Super Mario Bros. 2” in Japan into an accessible yet challenging experience. Improved graphics and thoughtful quality-of-life adjustments ensure this title offers both nostalgia and a fresh take on Mario’s lesser-known adventures.

 6. Sonic Mania Plus

“Sonic Mania Plus” is more than just a remake; it’s an expansion of “Sonic Mania,” which itself is a tribute to classic Sonic games through brand new levels and reimagined iconic stages from older titles. With pixel-perfect art style reminiscent of its predecessors coupled with new features like Encore mode and additional playable characters, this game captures the soul of early Sonic with a modern twist.

While playing through these platformer remakes, it quickly becomes evident just how timeless the genre is. These titles not only preserve but elevate their source material to contemporary standards – proving that good design endures, and that some games truly deserve a second run on modern platforms.
