When planning a trip, most travelers aim to get the best possible experience out of their journey. One way to enhance your adventure is by taking advantage of free stopovers offered by some airlines. A stopover is a layover that extends beyond 24 hours, allowing you to explore the city in which you’re stopping before continuing to your final destination. Here’s our list of the six best airlines that offer free stopovers:

1. Icelandair

Icelandair grants passengers flying between North America and Europe a complimentary stopover in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland. You can explore the city for up to seven days without any additional airfare cost. Some highlights include the Blue Lagoon, Golden Circle, and Northern Lights.

2. Turkish Airlines

With Turkish Airlines’ Touristanbul program, passengers with layovers in Istanbul lasting over 20 hours are eligible for a free city tour. The tour includes meals and allows you to visit attractions like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and Topkapi Palace.

3. Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines offers a “Singapore Stopover Holiday” package that includes hotel accommodations, airport transfers, and access to various attractions. The package starts at only $1 extra for some routes but must be booked in conjunction with your flight ticket.

4. TAP Portugal

TAP Portugal’s Stopover program allows you to discover two destinations for the price of one by offering free stopovers in Lisbon or Porto on trips between Europe, America, and Africa. The complimentary stopover can last up to five days, with discounted accommodations rates and exclusive offers at various attractions.

5. Finnair

Finnair’s “StopOver Finland” program presents an opportunity for passengers traveling between Europe and Asia to spend up to five days exploring Helsinki or other locations across Finland without purchasing additional airfare.

6. Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways offers a free stopover in Doha for passengers flying on select routes. The “Doha Stopover” program includes a complimentary transit visa, hotel accommodation, and transportation to and from the airport. You can take advantage of this offer for stays ranging from 12 hours to four days.

These airlines recognize the value of enhancing travelers’ experiences with complimentary stopovers. Not only are you given the opportunity to explore more destinations at no extra cost, but you can also break up long-haul flights and make your entire journey more enjoyable. Next time you’re planning an international trip, consider choosing an airline that offers free stopovers for a memorable travel experience.
