5 Ways to Preserve Fennel for Year-Round Enjoyment

Fennel is an aromatic and flavorful herb that enhances the taste of various dishes, from salads to roasts. However, its short growing season often leaves cooking enthusiasts yearning for more. To satisfy those cravings, here are five ways to preserve fennel for year-round enjoyment:

1. Freezing: One of the simplest ways to preserve fennel is by freezing it. Start by cleaning and chopping fresh fennel bulbs into manageable pieces. To maintain its flavor, blanch the bulbs in boiling water followed by an ice bath before placing them in airtight freezer bags or containers. Fennel fronds can be directly frozen inside airtight bags without blanching. When you’re ready to cook with them, simply remove the required amount and add it directly into your dish

2. Drying: Dried fennel provides a concentrated flavor ideal for seasoning dishes. To dry fresh fennel bulbs, slice them thinly and arrange them on a wire rack or dehydrator tray. Let them dry in the sun, or utilize a food dehydrator on low heat until they feel brittle and crisp. Grind dried fennel into powder for seasoning purposes or store the dried slices in an airtight container.

3. Pickling: Pickling fennel enables you to spice up your dishes with tangy flavors while also preserving its crunchiness. To create pickled fennel, combine vinegar, sugar, salt, and desired spices in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Meanwhile, pack sliced fennel bulbs tightly into sterilized jars. Pour the hot pickling liquid over the fennel, ensuring it is completely covered, then seal the jars and allow them to cool before refrigerating.

4. Fennel-infused oil: If you love the taste of fennel and want to enhance your cooking even further, consider making a fennel-infused oil. To do this, gently heat a neutral oil in a saucepan and add clean chopped fennel bulbs and fronds. Allow the oil to cool, then strain out the fennel pieces and pour the infused oil into an air-tight container. Fennel-infused oil is perfect for drizzling over salads, roasted vegetables, or pasta dishes.

5. Candied fennel: For those with a sweet tooth, candied fennel is a delightful way to enjoy and preserve this herb. Cook sliced fennel bulbs in sugar syrup until tender, then remove them from the syrup and place them on a wire rack set over parchment paper. Allow the candied slices to dry until crisp before storing them in an airtight container. Use candied fennel as an edible garnish or incorporate it into desserts.

By implementing these five preservation techniques, you can relish the unmistakable flavor of fennel throughout the year. Each method offers unique textures and flavors, allowing you to use your preserved fennel in various dishes and elevate your culinary creations.
