5 Ways to Cite a Research Paper

Citing a research paper is an essential part of academic writing. Properly acknowledging the work of others not only gives credit where it is due, but also helps in maintaining the integrity of academic writings. In this article, we will explore five different ways to cite a research paper employing widely-used citation styles.

1.American Psychological Association (APA) Style

This citation style is prevalent in social sciences. The in-text citation should include the author’s surname, followed by the publication year within parenthesis.

In-text Citation Example:

(Smith, 2020)

Full Citation in Reference List:

Smith, J. (2020). Title of the research paper. Journal Name, Volume(Issue), page range. DOI or URL

2.Modern Language Association (MLA) Style

The MLA citation style is widely used within humanities and liberal arts. For in-text citations, use the author’s surname followed by the page number where the information was found.

In-text Citation Example:

(Smith 34)

Full Citation in Works Cited List:

Smith, John. “Title of the Research Paper.” Journal Name, vol. X, no. Y, Year, pp. ZZ-ZZ.

3.Chicago Style

The Chicago style offers two methods for citation: Author-Date and Notes-Bibliography systems. The former resembles APA and is popular among writers in social sciences; the latter follows a superscript number for citations and suits literature and history writings.

In-text Author-Date Citation Example:

(Smith 2020)

Author-Date Full Citation in Reference List:

Smith, John. 2020. “Title of the Research Paper.” Journal Name X (Y): ZZ-ZZ.

In-text Notes-Bibliography Citation Example:

Notes-Bibliography Full Citation in Bibliography List:

Smith, John. “Title of the Research Paper.” Journal Name X, no. Y (Year): ZZ-ZZ.

4.Council of Science Editors (CSE) Style

The CSE style is commonly used in biological sciences. CSE offers three systems: Citation-Sequence, Citation-Name, and Name-Year.

Citation-Sequence In-text Example: [1]

Citation-Name In-text Example: (Smith[1])

Name-Year In-text Example: (Smith 2020)

Full Citation in Cited References List:

Smith J. Title of the research paper. Journal Name. Year; Volume(Issue):page range.

5.Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Style

The IEEE style is specifically tailored for engineers and computer scientists. It uses a bracketed number for an in-text citation that corresponds to a numbered reference in the Reference List.

In-text Citation Example:

[1]

Full Citation in Reference List:

[1] J. Smith, “Title of the research paper,” Journal Name, vol. X, no. Y, pp. ZZ-ZZ, YYYY.

Remember to be consistent with the citation style you choose throughout your entire paper and follow the specific guidelines for each style to ensure correct formatting. Properly citing research papers demonstrates academic honesty  and gives credit to previous researchers, promoting the advancement of knowledge across disciplines.
