Introduction:

Java is one of the most popular programming languages around the world due to its versatility, ease-of-use, and robustness. For beginners planning to learn Java, writing your first program can be a great starting point. In this article, we will explore four methods to write your first program in Java.

1. Using an Integrated Development Environment (IDE):

An IDE like Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA simplifies the process of writing and running Java programs. Follow these steps to create your first project:

a. Download and install the appropriate IDE (Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA) on your computer.

b. Launch the IDE and create a new project.

c. Follow the prompts to set up your project; choose Java as your language.

d. Create a new Java class file and name it “HelloWorld”.

e. Inside the class, create a main method by typing “public static void main(String[] args)”.

f. Within the main method, write “System.out.println(“Hello, World!”);” to print “Hello, World!” in the console.

g. Save your file, then run your program by clicking on the ‘Run’ icon or pressing the equivalent keyboard shortcut.

2. Using a Text Editor and Command Prompt (for Windows users) or Terminal (for macOS/Linux users):

If you prefer using a simple text editor like Notepad++, follow these steps:

a. Install a text editor such as Notepad++ and open it.

b. Create a new file and save it with a “.java” extension (for example: “HelloWorld.java”).

c. Write your Java code including the main method and println statement mentioned in Step 1e and 1f.

d. Open Command Prompt/Terminal, navigate to the directory with your .java file, and compile your code using the command “javac HelloWorld.java”.

e. Run your Java program using the command “java HelloWorld”. You should see “Hello, World!” in the console.

3. Online Java Compiler:

For those who want to work on their program without installing an IDE or text editor, there are various online Java compilers available. These include JDoodle, Repl.it, and Ideone. These websites allow users to write, compile, and execute Java code right in their browsers.

4. Using a Java-based Educational Platform:

There are numerous educational platforms that offer interactive learning environments for learning Java, such as Codecademy and SoloLearn. Featuring hands-on exercises and experienced instructors, these platforms provide a guided approach to writing your first Java program.

Conclusion:

Writing your first program in Java is an important milestone in learning the language. Depending on your preferred tools or learning methods, you can choose from IDEs like Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA, text editors, online compilers, or educational platforms. Whichever method you select, remember that practice and patience will help you become proficient in this powerful programming language.
