4 Ways to Use a Hi-Lift Jack

Introduction:

A Hi-Lift jack is a versatile and essential off-roading tool, often referred to as the “4×4 owner’s best friend.” It can be used in various scenarios that require lifting, pushing, pulling, and even winching. Here are four ways you can use a Hi-Lift jack to overcome challenging situations on your off-roading adventures.

1. Lifting your vehicle for tire changes or suspension maintenance:

When faced with a flat tire or suspension work while off-road, a Hi-Lift jack will come in handy. Position the jack along the vehicle’s sliders or bumpers and ensure it is secure before lifting. Make sure the jack is vertical and the baseplate rests firmly on the ground. Carefully lift the vehicle until the desired height is reached, then support it using suitable stands before commencing repair or maintenance.

2. Self-recovery using winch mode:

In certain situations, you might need your Hi-Lift jack to act as a winch for self-recoverying your vehicle. Attach one end of a strap or chain to an anchor point such as a tree and the other end around the vehicle recovery point, hooking both ends on the jack’s nose-end holes. Using proper winching techniques, pump the handle up and down while coordinating with slack adjustments to slowly pull your vehicle out of a stuck position.

3. Clamping objects:

A Hi-Lift jack can be used as a makeshift clamp by utilizing its clamping features. Place your material between the two vertical rails of the jack – using appropriate protective material if needed – then pump the handle to tighten or apply pressure upon it. This technique is useful in emergency scenarios where you need to secure objects like vehicle parts (e.g., broken bumper) or even aid in trail repairs that call for fabricating brackets or supports.
4. Spreading things apart or pushing objects:
Sometimes, off-roading might lead to a situation where you have to spread things apart or push an object out of your path. Turn the Hi-Lift jack into a spreader by positioning the top clamp clevis around the base of the jack, then moving it into the desired position between the objects you want to manipulate. Begin pumping and spreading until the desired distance is achieved. To push objects, position the jack against the object with its base firmly on the ground and pump to exert force.

Conclusion:

A Hi-Lift jack is an invaluable tool for off-road enthusiasts, showcasing its versatility through various applications in tough situations. When using a Hi-Lift jack, always remember to keep safety first. Use appropriate safety gears, follow precautions mentioned in user manuals, and never attempt any procedure that makes you uncomfortable or compromises your well-being.
