4 Ways to Store Biltong

Biltong is a traditional South African air-dried meat snack that has become popular worldwide. It’s made from various meats such as beef, game, and even ostrich, and seasoned with a blend of spices before being left to dry for several days. Keeping biltong fresh is crucial to maintaining its flavor and texture. Here, we will discuss four ways to store biltong so you can continue enjoying this delicious snack.

1. Airtight Containers

One of the most common and effective ways to store biltong is by using an airtight container. Choose a food-grade plastic or glass container with a tight seal to ensure that no air gets in or out. This will help prevent the biltong from getting too dry or moist after being opened. You can also add a piece of foil or parchment paper between layers of biltong to prevent them from sticking together. Once sealed, store your container in a cool, dark place away from sunlight to maximize freshness.

2. Vacuum-Sealed Bags

Vacuum sealing helps remove air from around the biltong, thus reducing the oxygen that may cause drying or spoilage. Using vacuum-sealed bags will also help prevent the biltong from absorbing odors from other foods in your pantry or refrigerator. Simply place your biltong into appropriately sized vacuum-seal bags and remove the air using a vacuum sealer device, which can be found easily in most kitchenware stores. Be sure not to overfill bags as this may cause an uneven seal.

3. Paper Bags

If you prefer your biltong to maintain some firmness while also allowing it to breathe, storing it in paper bags may be ideal for you. Brown paper bags provide a good balance between moisture retention and air circulation, preventing your biltong from becoming overly dry or moist. To store, simply place biltong slices or strips into the bag, fold the top several times, and use a clothespin or clip to close it. Keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

4. Fridge Storage

If you live in a particularly humid environment or want to prolong the shelf life of your biltong, consider storing it in the refrigerator. For optimal results, wrap your biltong loosely in wax paper or parchment paper and place it in a storage container with a few small ventilation holes to allow for airflow. Ensure the container’s lid is tightly sealed and store it in the center of your fridge to maintain an even temperature. Be sure to consume refrigerated biltong within a few weeks for best flavor and quality.

In conclusion, various methods can be employed to store biltong depending on your personal preferences and available resources. Whether using an airtight container, vacuum-sealed bags, paper bags, or fridge storage, remember to always store your biltong in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to ensure optimal flavor and freshness.
