4 Ways to Stop Coughing

Coughing can be an irritating and persistent symptom that often disrupts our daily routines. It may occur due to various reasons, including allergies, the common cold, or other respiratory infections. We all want to find quick and effective ways to ease our discomfort and stop that nagging cough. Here are four practical strategies to help you relieve your cough and get back to feeling better.

1. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water is essential when dealing with a cough. Staying hydrated helps thin the mucus in your throat, making it easier for your body to expel it. Warm fluids such as tea, hot water with a slice of lemon, or soup can be particularly soothing as they provide relief and also assist in breaking down congestion. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day during a coughing episode to aid in your recovery.

2. Use a Humidifier

Dry air can exacerbate your cough by irritating the throat and aggravating respiratory issues. Using a humidifier in your room helps maintain moisture levels in the air around you, easing irritation and potentially reducing the severity of your cough. You can also try taking warm baths or showers regularly since steam will help loosen the mucus in your throat, providing temporary relief.

3. Over-the-counter Medications

When it comes to relieving a persistent cough, over-the-counter (OTC) medications might prove beneficial. An OTC expectorant may help thin and expel mucus from the respiratory tract, while non-prescription cough suppressants may offer relief for dry, hacking coughs by inhibiting the reflex action that prompts you to cough. Additionally, antihistamines may come in handy for treating allergy-induced coughs by blocking histamine production and reducing inflammation. Consult with a medical professional before trying any medication to ensure you select the appropriate one for your symptoms.

4. Practice Proper Cough Etiquette

Spreading germs during a coughing episode is a significant concern, so it’s essential to practice proper cough etiquette. Always cover your mouth and nose while coughing by using a tissue or coughing into your elbow. Wash your hands afterward or, if you can’t access water immediately, use hand sanitizer to reduce the risk of spreading germs.

In conclusion, taking steps to improve your overall health and wellness, such as staying hydrated, utilizing humidifiers, using appropriate medications, and practicing proper cough etiquette can help alleviate your symptoms and put an end to that persistent cough. Bear in mind that certain situations may require the attention of a healthcare professional. If you experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, fever, chest pain or are unable to breathe properly after trying the above remedies, make sure to consult with a medical professional for further guidance.
