4 Ways to Pick Up a Puppy

Introduction

Bringing home a puppy is an exciting experience for anyone. As a pet parent, knowing how to safely pick up and hold your new fur baby is essential. Proper puppy-handling techniques can prevent injuries and instill a sense of trust in your pup. Here are four ways to safely pick up a puppy.

1.The Shoulder Scoop

The shoulder scoop is ideal for smaller puppies but can be used for larger breeds as well:

– Approach the puppy from the side and crouch down to their level.

– Slide one hand under their chest, right behind their front legs.

– Place your other hand behind their rear end, supporting their hind legs.

– Gently lift the puppy to your chest, allowing them to rest on your shoulder.

– Keep your hands in place to support their body weight without applying pressure on their spine.

2.Cradle Carry

This gentle hold is perfect for building trust between you and your new canine companion:

– Kneel beside the puppy and place one hand under their chest behind the front legs.

– Support the hind legs using your free hand.

– Scoop the puppy off the ground, cradling them horizontally against your chest.

– Ensure both hands remain securely placed underneath their body while holding them close.

3.Two-Handed Lift

Using both hands properly provides extra security while lifting larger pups:

– Approach the puppy from one side, keeping your feet shoulder-width apart.

– Reach under the chest with one arm, supporting it behind front legs and across the ribcage.

– Securely grasp their rear end with your free hand, fully supporting both the hind legs and pelvis.

– Slowly lift the puppy up, shifting its body weight onto your arms evenly.

4.One Arm Belly Hold

The belly hold is suitable only for very small puppies and should not be used for larger or heavier dogs:

– Kneel beside the puppy and gently slide your hand under their belly.

– Distribute their body weight comfortably on your forearm, close to your elbow.

– Use your free hand to gently secure their shoulder area, while keeping their hind legs supported by your arm.

– Keep a firm yet gentle grip on the puppy to avoid straining its spine.

Conclusion

Regardless of which method you use to pick up a puppy, always remain gentle and patient. Celebrate successful lifts with praise or treats to build trust and create positive experiences for the pup. Remember, practicing safe handling techniques will not only protect your puppy but also lay the foundation for a happy, healthy relationship between both of you.
