4 Ways to Mail a Firearm

Introduction

Mailing a firearm may seem like a daunting task, especially with the numerous regulations and restrictions surrounding their transportation. However, mailing a firearm isn’t as complicated as it may seem. In this article, we’ll cover four ways you can safely and legally mail a firearm while adhering to the law.

1. Use a Federally Licensed Dealer

The most secure way to mail a firearm is to use the services of a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder. FFL holders are authorized to conduct gun transactions, so they are well-versed in the proper packaging and shipping methods for firearms. To find a local FFL dealer, search the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) directory. The FFL holder will assume responsibility for packing and mailing your weapon, alleviating any concerns about following regulations.

2. Mail via UPS or FedEx

Both UPS and FedEx allow customers to mail firearms under certain circumstances. Two key stipulations include shipping between FFL dealers, and declaring that your package contains a firearm. Additionally, UPS requires firearms be shipped overnight for added security.

When using this method, make sure to follow all carrier-specific guidelines and pack your firearm according to their specifications. While these carriers offer convenience by mailing directly from their stores, understand that they may have additional fees or limitations on what types of firearms can be shipped.

3. Mail through USPS with Proper Authorization

While primarily servicing law enforcement officers (LEOs), the United States Postal Service (USPS) is another option for shipping firearms. For private citizens looking to mail rifles or shotguns, USPS requires an affidavit stating neither the shipper nor recipient are legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

Keep in mind that handguns cannot be mailed by private citizens through USPS—only LEOs or FFL holders have this ability.

4. Use Specialty Firearm Shipping Services

There are a number of niche shipping services that specialize in transporting firearms. These companies are familiar with firearm laws and are dedicated to providing secure, quick, and discreet shipping. Examples include Ship My Gun and US Gun Transport.

While specialty services may be more expensive than other options, utilizing their expertise can provide peace of mind when mailing firearms.

Conclusion

While there are a variety of methods for mailing firearms, understanding your options will ensure that you choose the best method for your situation. Always adhere to federal, state, and local regulations when mailing firearms, and consult with licensed professionals to ensure your firearm is shipped safely and legally. With the proper preparation and knowledge, anyone can successfully mail a firearm within the United States.
