Introduction:

A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communication within a network. It is crucial for network administrators and IT professionals to know the MAC addresses of devices connected to a network. In this article, we will discuss four different methods to find MAC addresses on a network.

1. Using Command Prompt (Windows):

To find the MAC address of a specific device on your network using the command prompt, follow these steps:

a. Press ‘Win + R’ keys to open the ‘Run’ dialogue box.

b. Type ‘cmd’ and hit Enter to open the command prompt.

c. In the command prompt window, type ‘arp -a’ command and hit Enter.

d. This command will display all the devices connected in your local network and their corresponding MAC addresses.

2. Using Terminal (macOS/Linux):

For macOS and Linux users, you can easily find the MAC address using Terminal with these steps:

a. Open Terminal from the utilities folder in Applications (macOS) or through searching it (Linux).

b. Type ‘arp -a’ command and hit Enter.

c. The terminal will display all devices connected to your local network, including their respective IP addresses and MAC addresses.

3. Using Router’s Web Interface:

Most modern routers come with user-friendly interfaces that let you access their settings through any web browser. To find MAC addresses via your router’s web interface, follow these steps:

a. Log into your router’s web interface by typing its IP address into your browser (usually ‘192.168.0.1’ or ‘192.168.1.1’).

b. Navigate to Connected Devices, Attached Devices, or similar menu options.

c. Here you will find a list of all devices currently connected to your network, complete with their respective IP and MAC addresses.

4. Using MAC Address Lookup Tools:

There are numerous third-party tools available for finding MAC addresses on a network. Some popular ones include Angry IP Scanner, Advanced IP Scanner, and SoftPerfect Network Scanner. These tools come with additional features like exporting the scanned results to an Excel/CSV files or finding open ports on devices.

Conclusion:

Finding MAC addresses on a network is essential for IT professionals and administrators to manage and verify the connected devices better. Whether you prefer using command-based methods or user-friendly utilities and third-party tools, there are several means at your disposal to get the job done. Choose the method that suits your expertise and requirements best to maintain a secure and well-managed network environment.
